What Makes Tungsten a Good Ring Metal?

Tungsten carbide rates about 9 on the Mohs hardness scale — the same as sapphire, and beaten only by diamond at 10. For context, a steel nail rates 5.5, a glass pane rates 5.5, and granite rates around 6. Nothing you encounter in daily life will scratch a tungsten ring.

The surface stays mirror-bright or brushed for life with virtually zero maintenance. No polishing needed. No tarnishing. Clean it with soap and water. A gold ring worn daily needs professional polishing every year or two to look its best. A tungsten ring never needs professional polishing.

How Scratch-Resistant Are Tungsten Rings?

In normal daily use, tungsten rings do not scratch. At Mohs 9, only diamond and certain industrial carbide abrasives will mark the surface. Keys will not. Steel tools will not. Concrete will not. Gym equipment will not. None of it leaves a mark.

How Long Will a Tungsten Ring Last?

A quality tungsten ring lasts a lifetime under normal daily wear. The metal does not degrade, tarnish, or corrode. It does not react with skin oils, water, or air. A tungsten ring left unworn for ten years looks identical to when it was put away. More on how long tungsten rings last.

The tungsten carbide itself lasts indefinitely. There is no chemical process that degrades it under normal wear conditions. Tungsten carbide has one of the highest melting points of any material, around 2,870 degrees Celsius. At room temperature and pressure, it is chemically inert.

IP-coated black rings: expect 5 to 10 or more years before any edge wear becomes visible on a quality ring. The flat face holds colour longest. Polished and brushed plain finishes need no attention at all over time.

What Are the Disadvantages of Tungsten Rings?

Tungsten rings do not resize. They crack under extreme impact. Standard ring cutters do not work in an emergency. These are real limitations. They rarely become problems. HONEST DISADVANTAGES
CANNOT BE RESIZED: Sintered manufacturing means the ring does not stretch or compress. A size change means a new ring.
CAN SHATTER UNDER EXTREME IMPACT: Tungsten is hard but brittle. A sharp blow at the right angle can crack it. This is rare in normal daily wear.
EMERGENCY REMOVAL IS DIFFERENT: Standard ring cutters will not cut tungsten. A&E departments use vice-grip pliers to crack the ring off. Safe, routine, and quick.
COBALT BINDER RISK (CHEAP RINGS): Cheap tungsten rings use cobalt binder. Cobalt oxidises against skin and causes reactions. Always confirm nickel binder before buying.

Are All Tungsten Rings the Same Quality?

No. Quality varies significantly. The two key markers are the binder material and the carbide content. Higher carbide content produces a harder, more durable ring.

Nickel binder: The quality choice. The nickel is locked into the sintered carbide, so very little is released against skin and reactions are rare. Newman Bands uses nickel-binder tungsten carbide exclusively. If you have a diagnosed nickel allergy, choose titanium — ours is nickel-free Grade 5.

Cobalt binder: Found in cheaper rings. Cobalt oxidises against skin oils and causes discolouration and skin reactions. This is the most important quality distinction when comparing tungsten rings.

There is no universally standardised grade for consumer tungsten rings. This is why buying from a retailer who describes their material specifications matters more than a grade number. Ask for the binder material. Ask for the carbide percentage. If the retailer does not know, that tells you something.
