Alan has overseen more than 100,000 ring orders since founding Newman Bands alongside Clare MacLachlan. Newman Bands is the trading name of Manzora Ltd, founded in Horsham, West Sussex in 2001. The business has sold rings since 2019, with every design and size held in stock in the UK โ€” most orders arrive within one to two days of dispatch. Alan personally answers customer queries on metal selection and ring choice every week. Newman Bands has over 10,000 verified five-star reviews on Trustpilot and Reviews.io.

Tungsten wins on scratch resistance and weight feel. Titanium wins on lightness, flexibility, and biocompatibility. Neither is better in absolute terms. It depends on your lifestyle.
We sell both metals and have no reason to steer you either way. This comparison comes from over 100,000 orders and the patterns we have observed in who buys what and why. About 70% of our customers choose tungsten. The other 30% choose titanium. Both groups are happy. The difference is in what each man values in a ring.

At a Glance: Tungsten vs Titanium

Tungsten is heavier, harder, and more scratch-resistant. Titanium is lighter, biocompatible, and cannot be resized. Both outperform gold and silver for daily wear durability. The table below gives you the head-to-head across the properties that matter most.

If you asked me directly what’s best, I would recommend Tungsten rings everytime. If you are worried by the extra weight (it’s really not as much as you think and you soon get used to it).

Property Tungsten Titanium
Mohs hardness 9-9.5 6
Weight Heavy (similar to gold) Very light (approximately 60% lighter than tungsten)
Scratch resistance Exceptional. Will not scratch in normal use. Good. Light scratches develop over time.
Resizable? No. Not at all. No. Cannot be resized. Order carefully using the free Newman Bands ring sizer.
Emergency removal Vice-grip pliers / crack method. All A&E departments. I have never heard of tungsten rings not being able to be removed when needed. Standard ring cutters work.
Skin sensitivity Safe with nickel binder. Avoid cobalt binder. Fully biocompatible. Same as surgical implants.
Black finish method IP/PVD coating (ion plating). Dense, hard bonded layer. IP/PVD coating (ion plating). Same vacuum deposition process.
Colour durability IP/PVD coating: highly durable. IP/PVD coating: durable. May wear at high-contact edges over years of heavy use.
Price range ยฃ45-ยฃ65 ยฃ45-ยฃ65
Best for Permanence, weight feel, scratch-proof finish. Lightweight comfort, active lifestyle, sensitive skin.

Weight and Feel: The Most Underrated Difference

Titanium is approximately 60% lighter than tungsten for the same ring size. A standard 6mm tungsten ring weighs around 10 to 14 grams. The equivalent titanium ring weighs 3 to 5 grams. They look nearly identical on the hand. In the hand, they feel completely different.

Tungsten feels substantial. Solid. Some men describe it as the ring equivalent of a good watch. Titanium feels almost absent from your finger. Many men say they forget they are wearing it.

Neither sensation is wrong. They suit different men. In our experience, the weight difference is the deciding factor for about 40% of customers who try both – with most men going for tungsten. Men who work with their hands consistently choose tungsten. The ring stays comfortable under gloves and does not get in the way.ย

Scratch Resistance: How Different Are They?

Titanium rings develop fine surface scratches over years of daily wear. They do not look dramatically damaged. The ring gradually develops what most men describe as a patina. A subtle, lived-in look. Many prefer it to the brand-new appearance. For a mirror finish that stays perfect indefinitely, tungsten is the better choice.
Tungsten rates 9 to 9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Only diamond, at Mohs 10, and certain industrial carbide tools sit above it. Keys, tools, granite worktops, gym equipment, building sites. None of these will mark a tungsten ring. The surface stays mirror-bright or brushed for life with zero maintenance.

Titanium rates Mohs 6. It is harder than gold at 2.5 and harder than silver. Fine scratches accumulate over years of daily wear. A jeweller will restore a polished finish with re-polishing. Brushed titanium hides scratches far better than polished. The difference between tungsten and titanium after 10 years of active wear is real, but smaller than the numbers suggest.

But it is the plating that will show wear first. This is true for all tungsten and titanium rings (not just ours).ย

I would recommend tungsten everytime to our customers if you want years of a great looking ring.

Scratch-proof vs scratch-resistant: Tungsten is effectively scratch-proof in normal daily use. Titanium is scratch-resistant. This distinction matters if a perfect finish for life is your priority.

Resizing: The Practical Reality

Tungsten rings do not resize. Tungsten carbide forms through a process called sintering. Manufacturers press tungsten carbide powder into a mould under enormous pressure, then heat-fuse it. The result is a single piece of compressed material. It does not stretch or compress.
Titanium rings cannot be resized by any jeweller. Like tungsten, if your size changes a new ring is required. Use the Newman Bands free ring sizer to confirm your exact size before ordering.

For both metals, accurate sizing before ordering is the most important step. Measure 3 or 4 times during the day if you can. If not, go for the evening when your fingers are at their largest.

Remember temperatures also effect your ring size. Cold equalls smaller size – warm summer – larger size.

If you are between sizes, order the larger size. About 30% of our customers sized in a jewelers need a size exchange regardless of how carefully they measured. Our size exchange process is straightforward and free.

SIZING TIP
Use a physical ring sizer for accuracy. Paper and string methods are not precise enough.
Rings differ by less than 1mm per size. Small errors matter.
If your ring size is uncertain, our Try at Home service lets you test three styles before committing.
Note: engraved rings are personalised goods and are not covered under the standard 14-day return policy (UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013).

Emergency Ring Removal: An Important Safety Difference

Tungsten rings do not cut with standard ring cutters. The hardness defeats them. Medical professionals use vice-grip pliers instead. They apply pressure at two opposing points on the ring. The ring cracks cleanly. Every A&E department in the UK has the tools to do this. The process takes seconds and the procedure is routine.
This is not a safety disadvantage. It is a different removal method. The ring does not deform or tighten the way a soft metal ring does when a finger swells. The crack method is clean and quick.
Titanium rings cut with standard ring cutters. Easier for emergency removal by anyone without specialist equipment. If you work in a role where ring removal speed is critical above all else, a silicone ring may suit you better than either metal.
IMPORTANT: EMERGENCY REMOVAL FACTS
Tungsten rings do not cut with standard ring cutters. A&E staff use vice-grip pliers to crack them off.
Titanium rings cut with standard cutters. Quicker for non-specialist removal.
In 100,000+ orders, Alan has never heard of a tungsten ring removal causing a problem.
If removal speed is critical to your work, speak to us before ordering. Silicone rings may suit you better.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose tungsten if you want scratch resistance, prefer a substantial, weighty feel, wear heavy watches, and have no plans to resize.

Choose titanium if you want lightweight ring or have sensitive skin.

My personal recommendation is tungsten. I would try it – you can always return it free, if it’s not for you. But I think you’ll prefer the look, feel and quality.

From the Retailer: What the Specs Do Not Show

Not all tungsten rings are the same quality. Cheap tungsten rings use cobalt as a binding agent in the manufacturing process. Cobalt oxidises against skin oils and causes reactions. Newman Bands uses only nickel-binder tungsten carbide. Always ask the retailer to confirm the binder material before buying.

Newman Bands uses IP/PVD coating across all ring finishes including black tungsten and black titanium. Ion plating deposits titanium nitride or zirconium nitride onto the ring surface using physical vapour deposition. The resulting layer is dense, hard, and significantly more durable than electroplated finishes. Both black tungsten and black titanium use the same PVD process and both look excellent when new. This is the same process used in high end watches.

Our titanium is aerospace-grade, the same specification used in aircraft frames and jet engines. It is biocompatible and safe for all skin types including men with metal sensitivities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Tungsten rates 9 to 9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Titanium rates 6. For context, diamond is 10 and a steel file is about 6.5. Tungsten is significantly harder than titanium and will not scratch from any material you encounter in daily life. Titanium is harder than gold at 2.5 and silver, but softer than tungsten.
Tungsten is roughly 2.5 times heavier than titanium for the same ring size. The weight is similar to gold. A 6mm tungsten ring weighs around 10 to 14 grams. The equivalent titanium ring weighs 3 to 5 grams. Many men love the substantial feel of tungsten. Others prefer the near-weightless feel of titanium.
No. Tungsten carbide forms through sintering and the metal does not stretch or compress. A size change means a new ring. Titanium rings also cannot be resized by any jeweller. For both metals, accurate sizing before ordering is essential. Use a physical ring sizer for accuracy. Paper and string methods are not reliable enough.
Neither is objectively better. Choose tungsten for scratch resistance and a substantial, weighty feel. Choose titanium for lightweight comfort and biocompatibility. Both outperform gold and silver for surface durability in daily wear. Both are excellent wedding ring metals. The right choice depends on what you value most.
In normal daily use, no. Mohs 9 to 9.5 means nothing in daily life will mark a tungsten ring. Only diamond and industrial carbides rate above it. Keys, tools, surfaces, gym equipment. None of it leaves a mark. The surface stays unchanged for life under normal conditions.
Yes. Titanium is lightweight, biocompatible, harder than gold, and low-maintenance. Colours including black and gold-tone are achieved through IP/PVD coating. It does not tarnish and does not need polishing.
