The word ‘tungsten’ has Swedish roots- meaning heavy stone. And that goes a long way towards describing its continued appeal.
A stylish but supremely robust ring, offering great value for money. What’s not to like?
If its undeniable qualities have won you over, you might well be asking: can tungsten rings be resized? This article has all the answers…
Can Tungsten Rings Be Resized?
Short answer? No. Tungsten’s strength is also its weakness, in this regard.
As well as its classic, stylish look, tungsten’s strength forms a large part of its appeal as wedding ring material. Only diamond is above it on the Mohs hardness scale!
The reason it can’t be resized is due to its chemical composition. (Don’t worry, we’ll go easy on the chemistry lesson here!)
Tungsten is formed with carbon to become the tungsten carbide used to make rings. The nature of this atomic bonding gives it that famous durability but brings with it a brittleness- so any attempts to alter it, will cause it to shatter, instead of bending.
So, it is robust and durable, just not suitable for resizing.

What If My Tungsten Ring Is Too Big?
Weight fluctuations can impact the size of your fingers—significant weight loss, leading them to shrink.
If your tungsten ring is too big, then you do still have some options:
Sizing beads: two metal beads soldered to the bottom of the ring, wedging it against the finger.
A fold-over: a small metal bar soldered to the bottom of the ring to help it fit more comfortably.
A ring ‘snuggie’: little silicone wedges you can buy online.
Spring inserts: a horseshoe-shaped piece of white gold, put into the band of the ring to tighten it up.
Hot glue: Yes, really. Many swear by the impact some dried hot glue can have. Cheap, but effective!

Conversely, if you gain a significant amount of weight, then it will eventually find its way to your fingers…
Unfortunately, in this instance, you will need to get your ring replaced.

How Tight Should a Tungsten Ring Be?
Here you want your ring to be able to slide over your knuckle when you put it on; snug, but not too tight. If it’s uncomfortable, you need to go bigger. It should be more of a chore getting it off than it was putting it on.
Are Tungsten Rings Hard to Remove?
No, a simple pair of vice grips will do the job easily enough- no need to call in the professionals!
Here tungsten carbide’s brittleness becomes a strength.
All you need to do is:
Close the wrench, adjusting its jaws, so they are clamped on the outside of the ring.
Turn the screw in the handle to tighten the vice’s grip
Then clamp down on the ring again.
The ring should then crack off.
If not, simple tighten further, and repeat these steps until it does.
