Alan has overseen more than 100,000 ring orders since founding Newman Bands alongside Clare MacLachlan. Newman Bands is the trading name of Manzora Ltd, founded in Horsham, West Sussex in 2001. The business has sold rings since 2019, with every design and size held in stock in the UK โ€” most orders arrive within one to two days of dispatch. Alan personally answers customer queries on metal selection and ring choice every week. Newman Bands has over 10,000 verified five-star reviews on Trustpilot and Reviews.io.

Cleaning a tungsten ring takes warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid, and a soft cloth. That is genuinely all. Tungsten carbide does not tarnish, corrode, or react with water. Most men never actively clean their tungsten ring. It maintains its appearance through normal daily wear.
Newman Bands has fulfilled over 100,000 ring orders from Horsham, West Sussex. Care queries are rare. When they do come in, the answer is almost always the same: soap and water.
In this guide

The Standard Cleaning Method

Five minutes. No special products. No jewellery cleaner required.
HOW TO CLEAN A TUNGSTEN RING: STEP BY STEP
Step 1: Fill a small bowl with warm (not hot) water and add one drop of washing-up liquid.
Step 2: Place the ring in the water and leave for one to two minutes.
Step 3: Use a soft cloth or soft-bristle toothbrush to gently wipe the surface.
Step 4: Rinse thoroughly under warm running water to remove all soap residue.
Step 5: Dry with a clean, lint-free cloth. Leave for five minutes before wearing.
This removes skin oils, soap residue, and general daily grime. For most men, once a week is more than enough. Many never need to do it at all.

What to Avoid When Cleaning Tungsten

Plain tungsten carbide is chemically resistant and extremely hard. It is difficult to damage with normal cleaning. PVD-coated black tungsten rings require slightly more care.
Product or Method Safe for Plain Tungsten? Safe for PVD-Coated Black Tungsten?
Warm water and washing-up liquid Yes Yes
Soft cloth or soft toothbrush Yes Yes, with gentle pressure
Jewellery polishing cloth Yes, lightly for fingerprints Use with light pressure only
Ultrasonic cleaner Yes Not recommended. Vibration can stress the coating over time.
Bleach or chlorine-based cleaners No No
Abrasive cleaners or paste No No
Steel wool or abrasive pad No No
Toothpaste No. Mildly abrasive. No

Caring for Black Tungsten Rings

Black tungsten rings use PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating. The coating is durable and holds up well to normal daily wear. It handles showering, handwashing, and washing up without issue. Two things accelerate coating wear: extended chlorine exposure and harsh chemicals.
Swimming pools: Extended exposure to pool chlorine affects PVD coating over time. Remove the ring before regular pool swimming where possible.
Industrial chemicals: Degreasers, strong acids, and alkali-based cleaners affect PVD coating. Remove the ring before working with these.
Everyday life: Shower, wash your hands, do the dishes. The PVD coating handles normal water and soap exposure without issue.
BLACK TUNGSTEN CLEANING: WHAT TO AVOID
No bleach, chlorine cleaners, or pool water left on the ring.
No abrasive cleaners. Avoid toothpaste.
Do not use ultrasonic cleaners on PVD-coated rings.
Remove before working with industrial cleaning products.

Does a Tungsten Ring Need Polishing?

Plain tungsten rings do not need polishing. They maintain their finish indefinitely without any abrasive treatment. The tungsten surface is harder than any polishing compound sold for use on jewellery. A polishing cloth rated for gold or silver has no abrasive effect on tungsten carbide.
Polishing cloths: A clean polishing cloth used gently on a plain tungsten ring removes fingerprints and smudges. This is fine. It is cleaning, not polishing. The cloth does not alter the tungsten surface.
Abrasive polishes: Do nothing on tungsten. Do not use them.
For PVD-coated black rings: Do not attempt to re-polish the coating at home. The PVD coating is hard. Home polishing does not restore it if it wears on edges over many years. If you have a question about your black ring, contact Newman Bands directly.

Can a Tungsten Ring Get Wet?

Yes. Tungsten carbide does not corrode, tarnish, or react with water. Shower, swim, and wash your hands without removing it. Plain tungsten requires no action after water exposure. Pat dry if you notice water marks, then carry on.
For PVD-coated black rings, dry thoroughly after swimming in a chlorinated pool. Normal daily water exposure is fine.

Tungsten Rings with Inlays

Newman Bands sells tungsten rings with inlays including carbon fibre, wood, opal, and faux meteorite. The tungsten itself needs no special treatment. The inlay material requires a little more thought.
Avoid regular submersion: The inlay is held in place with resin. Prolonged or frequent water exposure affects resin over time. Take the ring off before showering and swimming.
Handwashing: Fine to wash your hands while wearing an inlay ring. Brief soap and water contact does not damage the resin. Dry the ring thoroughly afterwards.
The same rule applies to all resin rings: This care applies to any ring using resin, not just Newman Bands products. Occasional water contact is fine. Regular submersion is not.

How Tungsten Compares to Other Metals for Maintenance

Metal Maintenance Required Frequency
Tungsten (plain) None. Soap and water when needed. When you notice buildup. Most men: rarely.
Tungsten (PVD black) Soap and water. Avoid chlorine and harsh chemicals. Weekly, or when needed.
Tungsten (with inlay: carbon fibre, wood, opal, faux meteorite) Avoid regular submersion โ€” resin used in inlays degrades with prolonged water exposure. Soap and water for normal cleaning. Dry well. Remove for showering and swimming. Handwashing fine.
Titanium None. Soap and water when needed. When you notice buildup.
Gold Professional polish. Anti-scratch care. Annual or bi-annual.
Silver Regular polishing. Anti-tarnish storage. Weekly to monthly.
