Alan has overseen more than 100,000 ring orders since founding Newman Bands alongside Clare MacLachlan. Newman Bands is the trading name of Manzora Ltd, founded in Horsham, West Sussex in 2001. The business has sold rings since 2019, with every design and size held in stock in the UK โ€” most orders arrive within one to two days of dispatch. Alan personally answers customer queries on metal selection and ring choice every week. Newman Bands has over 10,000 verified five-star reviews on Trustpilot and Reviews.io.

Yes. Tungsten rings are genuinely excellent for men who want near-indestructible scratch resistance and a substantial feel. They come with real limitations. This guide covers both.

We have sold over 100,000 rings. Tungsten is our most popular metal by a clear margin, accounting for about 70% of all orders. What follows is the honest version of what makes tungsten good and what you need to know before buying.

What Makes Tungsten a Good Ring Metal?

Tungsten carbide rates 9 to 9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Only diamond, at Mohs 10, sits above it in practical terms. For context, a steel nail rates 5.5, a glass pane rates 5.5, and granite rates around 6. Nothing you encounter in daily life will scratch a tungsten ring.
The surface stays mirror-bright or brushed for life with virtually zero maintenance. No polishing needed. No tarnishing. Clean it with soap and water. A gold ring worn daily needs professional polishing every year or two to look its best. A tungsten ring never needs professional polishing.
The weight is substantial. Similar in density to gold. Men who love the feel of a good watch tend to love tungsten. The ring carries a constant, quiet presence on the finger without feeling intrusive.

The price sits significantly below gold or platinum for comparable or better durability. At ยฃ50 to ยฃ90, many men buy two rings (as you get a second ring at 50% off). A plain everyday ring and a different style for occasions. I think of it as a sensible investment: one ring for work, one for weekends.

How Scratch-Resistant Are Tungsten Rings?

In normal daily use, tungsten rings do not scratch. Mohs 9 to 9.5 means only diamond and certain industrial carbide tools will mark the surface. Keys will not. Steel tools will not. Concrete will not. Gym equipment will not. None of it leaves a mark.
What scratches tungsten: Diamond. Industrial silicon carbide abrasives. Tungsten rubbed against tungsten, if two tungsten rings sit on adjacent fingers and rub together under heavy pressure.
What does not scratch tungsten: Stainless steel. Titanium. Gold. Silver. Platinum. Keys. Knives. Tools. Concrete. Granite. Gym equipment. Building sites.

We regularly hear from customers returning for a second ring in a different style while the original still looks new after years of wear. This is our most consistent feedback about tungsten. The first ring has not worn out. The customer simply wants a different look.

โ€œThe ring itself is even better than I had expected, it is beautifully finished, has a great weight and the quality of the engraving is excellent.โ€

How Long Will a Tungsten Ring Last?

A quality tungsten ring lasts a lifetime under normal daily wear. The metal does not degrade, tarnish, or corrode. It does not react with skin oils, water, or air. A tungsten ring left unworn for ten years looks identical to when it was put away.

The tungsten carbide itself lasts indefinitely. There is no chemical process that degrades it under normal wear conditions. Tungsten carbide has one of the highest melting points of any material, around 2,870 degrees Celsius. At room temperature and pressure, it is chemically inert.

IP-coated black rings: expect 5 to 10 or more years before any edge wear becomes visible on a quality ring. The flat face holds colour longest. Polished and brushed plain finishes need no attention at all over time.

What Are the Disadvantages of Tungsten Rings?

Tungsten rings do not resize. They crack under extreme impact. Standard ring cutters do not work in an emergency. These are real limitations. They rarely become problems. You should understand them before buying.
HONEST DISADVANTAGES
CANNOT BE RESIZED: Sintered manufacturing means the ring does not stretch or compress. A size change means a new ring.
CAN SHATTER UNDER EXTREME IMPACT: Tungsten is hard but brittle. A sharp blow at the right angle can crack it. This is rare in normal daily wear.
EMERGENCY REMOVAL IS DIFFERENT: Standard ring cutters will not cut tungsten. A&E departments use vice-grip pliers to crack the ring off. Safe, routine, and quick.
COBALT BINDER RISK (CHEAP RINGS): Cheap tungsten rings use cobalt binder. Cobalt oxidises against skin and causes reactions. Always confirm nickel binder before buying.
HEAVIER THAN TITANIUM: Some men find the weight uncomfortable over time, particularly in warm weather. Try the ring on if you are unsure.

Are All Tungsten Rings the Same Quality?

No. Quality varies significantly. The two key markers are the binder material and the carbide content. Higher carbide content produces a harder, more durable ring.
Nickel binder: Safe. Does not react with skin. Newman Bands uses nickel-binder tungsten carbide exclusively, confirmed from our supplier specifications.
Cobalt binder: Found in cheaper rings. Cobalt oxidises against skin oils and causes discolouration and skin reactions. This is the most important quality distinction when comparing tungsten rings.
Newman Bands also sells ceramic rings. Ceramic rings have the colour running all the way through the material โ€” unlike coated rings, scratches and marks are less visible because the interior of the material is the same colour as the surface.
There is no universally standardised grade for consumer tungsten rings. This is why buying from a retailer who describes their material specifications matters more than a grade number. Ask for the binder material. Ask for the carbide percentage. If the retailer does not know, that tells you something.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if bought from a reputable retailer using nickel-binder tungsten carbide. Quality varies widely across the market. The key markers are the binder material (nickel, not cobalt) and the carbide content. Higher carbide content means harder and more durable. Ask the retailer to confirm both before buying.
In normal daily use, no. Mohs 9 to 9.5 means only diamond and industrial carbides will mark the surface. Keys, steel tools, concrete, gym equipment. None of it leaves a mark on a tungsten ring.
The metal itself lasts indefinitely. Tungsten carbide does not degrade under normal conditions. IP-coated black finishes last many years before edge wear shows. The most common reason men buy a replacement tungsten ring is wanting a different style. Not because the original wore out.
No. Tungsten does not resize due to its sintered manufacturing. Accurate sizing before ordering is essential. Newman Bands offers a free size exchange on unworn rings within 100 days. Use a physical ring sizer. Paper and string methods are not precise enough.
Yes. Nickel-binder tungsten is safe for all skin types. A&E departments remove tungsten rings routinely using vice-grip pliers. The procedure takes seconds. In over 100,000 orders, we have not had a customer report a removal problem. Avoid cobalt-binder tungsten from unknown sources.
Nickel-binder tungsten carbide does not oxidise against skin. No green discolouration occurs. Only cobalt-binder tungsten causes skin reactions including green discolouration. Buying from a retailer who confirms nickel binder removes this risk entirely.
For daily wear, yes. A tungsten ring outperforms gold on durability and costs significantly less. The trade-off is no resizing. If your ring size is stable and scratch resistance matters to you, tungsten delivers outstanding value.
