PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition. It is a family of vacuum-based coating processes in which a solid target material is converted to vapour and then deposited onto a substrate, in this case a tungsten ring. The key variable in quality is how the deposition is done.

In the process Newman Bands uses, the tungsten ring is cleaned and placed in a vacuum chamber. The target material, zirconium for black rings, is vaporised. The vaporised particles travel through the vacuum and deposit onto the ring surface, forming a crystalline nitride layer. This layer bonds physically to the tungsten at a level electroplating does not achieve.

The distinction matters. Electroplated rings carry a thin metallic layer sitting on the surface. PVD rings carry a bonded nitride layer integrated with the surface. The performance difference over years of wear is significant.
