The 10 Best Silver Rings for Men That Aren't Sterling Silver (2026)

Written by Alan MacLachlan, Owner, Newman Bands (Horsham, West Sussex)

Alan has overseen more than 100,000 ring orders since founding Newman Bands with Clare. Newman Bands is the trading name of Manzora Ltd, incorporated in 2001; it has sold men's rings since 2019, with every design and size held in stock in the UK and same-day dispatch on orders before 5pm — most orders arrive within one to two days. Alan personally answers customer queries on metal selection and ring choice every week. Newman Bands has more than 15,000 verified customer reviews — rated 4.99 out of 5 on Reviews.io and 5.0 on Trustpilot.

We sell seven of the ten rings in this list from our warehouse in Horsham, West Sussex. None of them is sterling silver. They are silver-coloured tungsten carbide and titanium, not solid silver, and we say so on every card. The other three come from H Samuel, Warren James and Amazon, and we say where each of them wins. We earn nothing from the rival links.
Our winner is the Elie, a plain polished silver tungsten band, £58. The runner-up is the Champion at £64, the ring our customers choose more than any other. The lightest rings here are the titanium picks, and the cheapest rings we sell on this list are the two titanium picks at £48.
About half of the rings we send out are silver-coloured, so this is the colour we know best. We read every rival’s product and policy pages on 13 and 14 October 2026, went back through our verified reviews for the reasons people give, and asked Alan what the returns desk sees. Where sterling silver genuinely wins, we say so in its own section below.
By the end you will know which silver-coloured ring suits the way you live and what the “silver” on a tungsten or titanium ring actually is. You will also know what a sterling band costs on the high street, and what happens if yours does not fit.

Short answer: the best silver ring for most men is not silver. A silver-coloured tungsten carbide band like our Elie keeps its polish where sterling tarnishes, scratches and bends, and it costs less than most high-street sterling bands. Choose titanium instead if you have a diagnosed nickel allergy or want a ring you cannot feel. Choose sterling only if you want a hallmarked precious metal and plan to look after it.

In Alan’s words: “Our silver tungsten and titanium rings are better than solid silver for a fraction of the price. They are stronger, look better and customers are delighted. You can try them risk free at home, and if you don’t like it for any reason return it free for a full refund.” The reviews in each card below are the evidence.
In this guide

How we chose these ten

We started from what our customers actually buy. Silver-coloured rings are about half of everything we send out. Our seven picks are the silver-coloured designs we shortlisted with Alan for this guide, led by our most-reviewed plain silver tungsten band and our single best-selling ring. Two of the three rivals appear in the Shopping listings for these searches, and H Samuel ranks first for the head term.
We say plainly what the silver is. None of our seven contains any silver, and none of the three rivals’ pages says theirs does. Ours are tungsten carbide or Grade 5 titanium with a silver-coloured PVD finish over a metal that is itself grey.
Alan’s point, in his words: apart from solid precious metals, “all rings are plated and can suffer the same issues, not just ours. But clearly ours are a lot less than solid metals.” We would add that sterling and white gold bands are often rhodium-plated to keep them bright; four of the sterling sellers below mention rhodium plating on their own pages.
We read the small print, not the snippets. Every rival price, returns window, delivery charge, resizing line and material description below comes from that retailer’s own product or policy page, read on 13 or 14 October 2026. Where a page would not load for us, we say so.
We weighed them. Alan put all seven of our picks on the warehouse Salter scale on 14 October 2026, one size, in every width they come in. The lightest was 3 g, the 6mm Resolve and Tranquil in titanium. The heaviest was 16 g, the 8mm Elie, Champion and Zen in tungsten. The grams are in each card. None of the three rivals publishes a weight on the page we read.
We asked Alan what the returns desk sees. His view: “Plated rings can scratch. They are super hard wearing, but like anything they can wear or unfortunately take a heavy knock. Tungsten is better than titanium and we have far less issues with tungsten rings. I would only go for titanium if you are allergic to tungsten or need a lightweight ring.”
We say what we don’t like, including about our own rings. Every drawback we list for our tungsten rings is true of every tungsten ring on the market. The titanium drawbacks are true of every titanium ring, whoever sells it.
What we excluded: sterling silver rings, because the title promises rings that are not sterling silver. They have their own section below, with prices from the sellers’ own pages, so you can see the gap and where sterling wins. We also left out rings we could not verify on the seller’s own page. Rings are a personal choice; this list is a shortlist, not a verdict on yours.

Straight out of the sea and still on the hand: the Elie, polished silver-coloured tungsten. A sterling band is softer and tarnishes over time; this one needs a rinse.

Best overall£58 at Newman Bands, checked 14 Oct 2026

What we like

  • The classic polished dome, the shape most people picture when they say "silver wedding ring", in a metal that holds a mirror polish
  • Tungsten carbide, Mohs 9, so keys, DIY and a day at work do not leave the marks a sterling band picks up
  • 11 g in 6mm and 16 g in 8mm on our scale: the weight of a solid ring, without the softness
  • 6mm in 21 sizes from K to Z5; 8mm in 17 sizes from O to Z5
  • Our most-reviewed plain silver tungsten band

What we don’t like

  • A hard scrape on a sharp edge can mark the finish, as on any coated ring; because the metal underneath is grey too, it shows far less than on a gold-coloured ring
  • Tungsten cannot be resized, so the size has to be right first time; if any of that puts you off, try it at home with a free return and full refund within 100 days, unless engraved

The Elie is the ring to buy if you want a silver wedding band that still looks new years from now. It is our most-reviewed plain silver tungsten design, and the kind of ring Alan told us to lead with: tungsten. It is tungsten carbide with a silver-coloured PVD finish, not solid silver.

What you get for £58 is the hardness. Tungsten carbide sits at 9 on the Mohs scale; silver sits at 2.5 to 3, about where a fingernail can mark it. That is why a sterling band on a working hand picks up scratches quickly and an Elie barely marks. One customer put it simply: being tungsten carbide, they "don't get scratched if you do DIY or work on the car".

On the hand, most people cannot tell it from silver. One reviewer said it "couldn't be told apart from a platinum or silver band, unless you look very closely and notice a slightly dim grey shimmer to it". That is the honest version, and we agree with it.

Weight is the other difference from sterling. Tungsten carbide is about a third denser than silver, and on our scale the Elie is 11 g in 6mm and 16 g in 8mm, so it feels substantial. Alan's experience: customers "soon get used to the slight extra weight. It's only a few grams."

If it does not fit, you exchange it for another size free, as many times as it takes. That is our answer to tungsten being impossible to resize.

What customers say about it:

“Bought the Elie ring in Tungsten as a replacement for my original silver wedding ring. It arrived in good time, looked better than on the website and fitted perfectly. Very happy with the product and the service.”
Simon Wilks, Sweden · verified five-star review

“Beautifully finished, I couldn't see the slightest blemish. They are comfortable to wear and being tungsten carbide, they don't get scratched if you do DIY or work on the car.”

2. Our best seller: The Champion — £64 at Newman Bands

Champion silver tungsten ring from Newman Bands worn on a man's ring finger

Our best seller£64 at Newman Bands, checked 14 Oct 2026

What we like

  • The ring our customers choose more than any other design, in any colour
  • A brushed silver face that hides everyday marks, lifted by a thin rose gold groove and black edges, so it reads as silver from across a room and as something more up close
  • The hardest test we have on record: a motorway worker's Champion after months of truck maintenance, a triathlon and fishing, and in his words there "isn't a single scratch or blemish on the ring" (his photo is in the price section below)
  • 6mm in 17 sizes from M to Z3; 8mm in 17 sizes from O to Z5

What we don’t like

  • Three colours means three finishes to keep: a deep scrape on the black edge can show grey, as on any coated ring
  • It is the heaviest look on this list at 12 g in 6mm and 16 g in 8mm on our scale, and one reviewer felt the engraving "looks more like printing but it still looks amazing"
  • Tungsten cannot be resized; the free size exchange covers the fit, and the 100-day free return (unless engraved) covers a change of heart

Alan asked for the Champion on this list, and the reason is simple: it is our single best-selling ring. Most of its face is brushed silver, which is why it belongs in a silver guide. The rose gold groove and black edges are what make it the ring people stop to ask about.

The brushed face is the practical part. A brushed finish is made of fine lines, so a new fine line from a key or a door handle disappears into it. A polished ring shows the same mark until it is buffed.

Two things come up again and again in its reviews: the weight, and the price. One customer bought it for a husband who "does a lot of manual hard work" and "knew this would uphold it". Another ordered a second one after losing weight, because "the colours, the weight, the craftsmanship and quality all at that price point is insane".

Like every tungsten ring, it cannot be resized and it is brittle rather than bendy. Alan's rule from our tungsten guide: tungsten rings "are brittle, so can break if dropped. Unlikely, but does happen." When it happens we look after the customer; in Alan's words, "unlike other stores we will help you out".

What customers say about it:

“The ring looks great - really good value for money. The brushed silver looks really good, and the black and gold make the ring stand out without looking brash. Really good combo.”
Jamie · verified five-star review

“Very thick heavy ring. Looks good on my husband's finger. I ordered this one as my husband does a lot of manual hard work and I knew this would uphold it.”

Proof from a hard day’s work. The toughest test any of our rings has had on record is a Champion. Gareth works on the motorway and spent his days on truck maintenance; he bought the ring in the summer of 2025, did a triathlon in it and went fishing in it, then sent Alan this photo in November.

Gareth's own photo of his Champion, sent with the email: months of motorway work, truck maintenance, a triathlon and fishing.
“My hands are constantly dirty, wet, covered in oil and grease. I’ve also done a triathlon wearing it and I have been fishing in it many times, and it honestly looks like brand new. There isn’t a single scratch or blemish on the ring.”
Gareth, by email to Alan, 28 November 2025

3. Best brushed silver: The Zen — £58 at Newman Bands

Best brushed silver£58 at Newman Bands, checked 14 Oct 2026

What we like

  • A brushed centre that hides the marks of a working week, with polished edges that catch the light, a finish H Samuel charges £249 for in sterling (its 7mm matt and polished band, 13 October 2026)
  • The same tungsten carbide as the Elie at the same price and the same weight: 11 g in 6mm, 16 g in 8mm on our scale
  • 6mm in 21 sizes from K to Z5; 8mm in 17 sizes from O to Z5
  • Several of its reviews are replacement stories: a ring lost at work, a ring outgrown after weight loss

What we don’t like

  • A hard scrape on a sharp edge can mark the finish, as on any coated ring; the grey metal underneath keeps it discreet
  • One reviewer's partner found it "bulky", which is the honest side of a solid tungsten band, even at 6mm
  • No resizing: exchange it free until it fits, or send it back free within 100 days unless engraved

If you want silver without a mirror finish, the Zen is the ring. The brushed centre reads as matte silver and the polished edges frame it. It is the look Warren James sells on its £85 sterling band as a "frosted centre against the highly polished rims", in a metal that keeps the frosting.

Several reviews on this ring are replacement stories. One customer replaced a wedding ring her husband lost at work with "the exact same as his first one but 1/3 of the price and the exact same quality", and used the free size exchange on the way. Another replaced a ring that was "badly scratched and damaged" with a Zen "perfect for his manual job".

That is the case for brushed tungsten in one sentence: the finish that hides marks, on the metal that does not take them.

What customers say about it:

“Ordered my husband a replacement wedding ring after he lost his first one at work. The ring is like the exact same as his first one but 1/3 of the price and the exact same quality! Very quick delivery and exchange for a different size.”
Hannah Bassett · verified five-star review

“Super quality ring, for the money fantastic, really solid heavy ring and with the curved inner super smooth to take on and off. Size was spot on. Just as good as anything from more expensive high street retailers.”

4. Best thin band: The Elie Thin Style — £58 at Newman Bands

Best thin band£58 at Newman Bands, checked 14 Oct 2026

What we like

  • The Elie's polished dome at 4mm, for a slimmer finger, a first ring, or a pair where one partner wants a narrower band
  • Still tungsten carbide, so it holds its shine where a thin sterling band bends and wears thin fastest; 7 g on our scale
  • 18 sizes from K to Z2
  • About one in ten of the rings we send out is 4mm, so this is a real choice, not an afterthought

What we don’t like

  • Only 4mm: if you want a wider ring, it is the Elie above
  • A thin band shows a hard edge-scrape sooner than a wide one simply because there is less face
  • No resizing, so if you are unsure order two sizes and send one back free within 100 days (unless engraved)

Thin is where sterling silver suffers most. A 4mm sterling band has little metal to start with, and every polish takes a little more off. The Elie Thin Style is the same polished dome as our best overall ring, in tungsten carbide, so it starts thin and stays that way.

One couple picked it because they "didn't want to spend a fortune on rings" and wanted "something to exchange on wedding day that looked good and that would be hard-wearing". Another customer bought it to replace a lost ring and found it "stays shiny".

Engraving works the same as on our wider rings: inside only, £15, done here in Horsham. One reviewer had it engraved and still had it "shipped the next day".

What customers say about it:

“Genuinely impressed by the quality. Very solid and sturdy and polished to a high shine (which won't fade due to tungsten carbide's hardness). Looks and feels much more expensive than what I paid for it.”
Calum Robertson · verified five-star review

“This ring is more beautiful in person! It's a heavyweight ring that's fits really well, and despite asking for engraving, which was done really well, it was shipped the next day. Super happy with our purchase and highly recommend.”

Best grooved band£63 at Newman Bands, checked 14 Oct 2026

What we like

  • One polished groove through a brushed band: the detail that makes it a design rather than a plain ring, without any second colour
  • The groove is cut into the metal, not printed on, so it stays; 12 g in 6mm and 15 g in 8mm on our scale
  • 6mm in 19 sizes from M to Z5; 8mm in 17 sizes from O to Z5
  • One reviewer compared it with the same style on the high street: "a fraction of the price"

What we don’t like

  • One polished groove is one more edge that can catch a hard knock, as on any coated ring
  • Cannot be resized; the free size exchange is the answer, and the 100-day free return (unless engraved) if you change your mind

The Milan is the ring for someone who has looked at grooved sterling bands in a shop window and wants the same look on a hand that works. One customer did exactly that: "We had looked at various other jewellers on the high street so knew the type we wanted but this was a fraction of the price and great quality."

It is also where one reviewer raised the nickel question. He wore a white gold ring for seven years before his finger "reacted badly to the nickel in the ring" and chose the Milan. If you have a diagnosed nickel allergy, read the titanium picks below first: our tungsten carbide uses a nickel binder, and we say so.

Size exchanges are free and unlimited, which one reviewer used after ordering the wrong size: "the returns process was so simple to follow". Another bought it to replace a ring her husband had lost, and he "actually prefers this one".

What customers say about it:

“Really happy with our purchase and would definitely recommend. Great quality for a great price.”
Isabel Lewis, Turkey · verified five-star review

“I bought this ring for my husband to wear to work. We were both astounded by the quality and appearance of the ring. Unfortunately we ordered the wrong size but the returns process was so simple to follow and we have ordered a different size. I think my husband might actually prefer this to his wedding ring it is that good!”

6. Best under £50: The Resolve — £48 at Newman Bands

Resolve silver titanium ring from Newman Bands worn on a man's ring finger
The Resolve on the hand: a plain polished band in Grade 5 titanium, the lightest metal here and the lowest price of our seven. Alan's hand photo, AI-retouched: skin and background edited, ring as photographed.

Best under £50£48 at Newman Bands, checked 14 Oct 2026

What we like

  • Grade 5 titanium: 3 g in 6mm and 4 g in 8mm on our scale, against 11 g and 16 g for the Elie, so you forget you are wearing it
  • Nickel-free by specification, which is where we send anyone with a diagnosed nickel allergy
  • £48, the lowest price of our seven, and one of our five best-selling rings of any colour
  • 6mm in 21 sizes from K to Z5; 8mm in 17 sizes from O to Z5

What we don’t like

  • Titanium is about 6 on the Mohs scale, so it marks more easily than tungsten; one reviewer replaced a high-street titanium band that "had become very dull and scratched", and ours will show wear sooner than the Elie
  • The colour is a touch darker than platinum, "only noticeable when compared" in one reviewer's words
  • Titanium cannot be resized; if any of that puts you off, try it at home with a free return and full refund within 100 days, unless engraved

The Resolve is the ring for two kinds of buyer: the one who has never worn a ring and does not want to feel one, and the one who has reacted to a ring before. It is a plain polished band in Grade 5 titanium, the alloy Ti-6Al-4V, with no nickel in its specification.

Alan is honest about where it sits: "I would only go for titanium if you are allergic to tungsten or need a lightweight ring." Those are exactly the people who buy it. One customer's husband "had an allergic reaction to the metal" of a white gold ring bought elsewhere and "loves this titanium ring". Another bought it for a 30th anniversary because "his gold one had worn thin over the years".

Price comes up in about one Resolve review in five, more than on any other ring on this list. "More than half the price of an identical ring we saw in our local jewellers," one reviewer wrote. Another had bought his original from a high-street chain "at double the cost of this ring".

The trade-off is hardness. Titanium is far harder than silver, but it is not tungsten, and a polished titanium ring will pick up fine marks over years of wear. The brushed Tranquil below hides them; the Resolve shows its polish.

What customers say about it:

“Beautiful quality, and rich colour Titanium ring. More than half the price of an identical ring we saw in our local jewellers, Ordered and arrived within 3 days. This was bought for my husband as a 30th wedding anniversary gift, as his gold one had worn thin over the years. He was elated with the fit and how comfortable it felt on.”

7. Best brushed titanium: The Tranquil — £48 at Newman Bands

Tranquil silver titanium ring from Newman Bands worn on a man's ring finger

Best brushed titanium£48 at Newman Bands, checked 14 Oct 2026

What we like

  • A brushed satin dome, so the fine marks titanium picks up vanish into the finish instead of showing on a polish
  • The same Grade 5 titanium and price as the Resolve: 3 g in 6mm and 5 g in 8mm on our scale
  • Our most-reviewed silver-coloured titanium ring, and one of our five best-selling rings of any colour
  • 6mm in 21 sizes from K to Z5; 8mm in 17 sizes from O to Z5

What we don’t like

  • Matte silver reads quieter than polished; if you want the ring to catch the light, it is the Resolve or the Elie
  • Titanium marks more easily than tungsten, even if a brushed finish hides it
  • Cannot be resized; size exchanges are free and unlimited, and returns are free for 100 days unless engraved

If you want titanium, this is the finish to have it in. A brushed surface is already a field of fine lines, so the new ones a softer metal collects do not show. The Tranquil has more reviews than any other silver-coloured titanium ring we sell, and one reviewer's word for it is "lightweight".

It also works as a second ring for holidays. One customer ordered it "as a holiday replacement for my actual wedding band of the same design". At £48, a ring you can wear in the sea without worrying about it is a cheap insurance policy on the one you cannot.

If you do not know your size, choose "I don't know my ring size" at the checkout and a free sizer comes first. One reviewer: "I send them the seize, the next morning the ring was there."

What customers say about it:

“Ordered a ring to have as a holiday replacement for my actual wedding band of the same design. Great product and design which is perfect for me and the sizing was spot on at a great price.”

8. Best if you want a shop to walk into: Tungsten Men's Polished Ring, 5mm — £99.99 at H Samuel

Bar chart of Mohs hardness: silver 2.5 to 3, titanium about 6, tungsten carbide 9
Mohs hardness: silver 2.5 to 3, titanium about 6, tungsten carbide 9. Mineral-reference figures for the pure metals; sterling is a little harder than fine silver, and Grade 5 titanium harder than pure titanium.
Best if you want a shop to walk into£99.99 at H Samuel, checked 14 Oct 2026

What we like

  • A high-street jeweller: try it on, and return or exchange it in any UK store within 30 days, free
  • Free standard delivery over £40
  • The same material family as ours, so it will wear like a tungsten ring, not like sterling

What we don’t like

  • £99.99 for a 5mm polished band, against £58 for our 6mm Elie, so you pay about £40 for the shop
  • Whole sizes P to Z only on the day we looked, so nothing below P and no half sizes
  • 30-day returns, against 100 days with us

If you want to put a ring on in a shop before you pay for it, no website can offer that, and we will not pretend otherwise. H Samuel sells a 5mm polished tungsten band for £99.99, and its page offers free 30-day returns and exchanges, in store or by post.

What you are paying for is the shop. The ring is a plain polished band in a silver-grey, the same idea as our Elie, which is £58 in 6mm or 8mm.

H Samuel's page offered sizes P to Z on 14 October 2026; ours runs from K to Z5. Its own tungsten FAQ, read for our tungsten guide, says tungsten rings "cannot usually be resized", which is correct and worth reading before you buy from anyone.

Our alternative to the shop floor is Try at Home: three rings and a sizer delivered to your door for a £5 net cost. A prepaid label sends back the ones you do not keep.

Not for you if: you want more than 30 days to decide, a size below P, a half size, or a 6mm or 8mm width.

9. Best high-street titanium under £30: Titanium Mens Band Ring — £29 at Warren James

Bar chart of change-of-mind returns windows: Newman Bands and Temple & Grace 100 days, H Samuel, Beaverbrooks, Wedding Rings Direct, Amazon and Serge DeNimes 30 days, Warren James 28 days
Change-of-mind returns windows from each seller's own policy page, read 13 or 14 October 2026. Newman Bands excludes engraved rings; Serge DeNimes allows only a partial refund after 14 days; Warren James exchanges in store only.
Best high-street titanium under £30£29 at Warren James, checked 13 Oct 2026

What we like

  • £29 from a high-street chain with shops to walk into, reduced from a quoted RRP of £63
  • Titanium, so it is light and will not tarnish
  • Comfort-fit, by its own description

What we don’t like

  • The page names no titanium grade, no finish process and no sizes in its description; its details line gives the width as 7mm (read 13 October 2026)
  • Nothing on the page says whether the surface is coated or how thick any coating is, and a cheaper, thinner coating is one of the usual ways a ring gets to £29
  • Exchanges only in a store, within 28 days; a refund by post is at your own postage cost, within 28 days of the dispatch email
  • Delivery is £3.95 under £59, so the ring costs £32.95 delivered
  • No statement on whether it can be resized

The honest case for this ring is the price: £29, from a chain with over 200 shops, by its own banner. If you want a titanium band for a holiday or a trial run and you have a Warren James nearby to swap it in, it does the job.

What the page does not tell you matters more at £29 than at £290. It does not say which titanium alloy the ring is, how the surface was finished, or what sizes it comes in.

One of the easiest ways to get a ring down to this price is a cheaper, thinner coating, or none. A thin coating is the part that wears first, and the page gives you no way to tell. The description is two sentences and a sales line, and the details line lists only "Titanium", "Men's Band", "Comfort Fit" and "Width: 7mm". Ours is Grade 5, Ti-6Al-4V, and we say so.

The returns are the other difference. Warren James' policy page says website purchases can be exchanged "at one of our stores within 28 days", that "exchanges cannot be processed by post", and that a refund by post is at your cost. We give 100 days, free, with the label.

Alan's view: "You can always buy cheaper, but often you'll regret it later. The plating on cheaper rings is often very thin. It's like buying cheap shoes: they look ok to start with, but soon show wear."

Not for you if: you want to know what grade of titanium you are buying, you may need to post it back, or you want more than 28 days.

10. Best if price is all that matters: A silver tungsten band on Amazon — £27.99 and up

Bar chart of what a silver-coloured men's band cost in October 2026: sterling from £72.39 at Wedding Rings Direct to £275 at Beaverbrooks, Newman Bands tungsten and titanium £48 to £64, Amazon and Warren James rivals £27.99 to £31.99
What a silver-coloured men's band cost in October 2026: every price read from the seller's own page on 13 or 14 October 2026. Sterling unless stated; the Resolve is titanium, the other Newman Bands bars tungsten.
Best if price is all that matters£27.99 and up on Amazon.co.uk, checked 13 Oct 2026

What we like

  • £27.99 for an 8mm silver band with a brushed centre, or £31.99 for a 7mm brushed band with bevelled edges, dispatched by Amazon, with Amazon's 30-day return in its original condition
  • Tungsten carbide, so the base material is the same family as ours

What we don’t like

  • Neither listing we read says what the silver finish is: no "plated", "coated" or "PVD" anywhere in the product text, so you cannot tell whether the price was cut with a thinner coating that will not hold up as well
  • Both call the ring "hypoallergenic" and never say what the carbide is bound with
  • On both, one bullet promises "180-Day Coverage" while the warranty section further down says "a 30 DAY WARRANTY"
  • Sold by a third-party seller, not by Amazon, and both listings say the ring "cannot be resized"

This is the ring for a buyer who has decided that price is the only thing that matters, and we would rather say so than pretend it does not exist. The two silver bands we read on Amazon on 13 October 2026 were £27.99 for an 8mm band with a brushed centre, and £31.99 for a 7mm brushed band with bevelled edges.

Both were sold by the same third-party seller and dispatched by Amazon.

What you give up is information. Neither listing says what the silver-coloured surface is, so you cannot know how it will wear. A cheaper, thinner coating is one of the easiest ways to cut the cost of a plated ring, and it is the first thing to go. At £27.99 that is the question to ask, and neither listing answers it.

Both call the ring hypoallergenic without saying what binds the carbide. Ours is nickel, we say so, and we explain what that means below. Both promise 180 days of cover in one line and 30 days in another.

Sizes are the practical limit. Tungsten cannot be resized, as the listings themselves say. Our range covers every whole UK size from K to Z5, with a free sizer if you choose "I don't know my ring size", and free exchanges as many times as it takes.

Alan's view: "Unlike other stores, we will help you out. Just look at our reviews to see our service."

Not for you if: you are not certain of your size, you want to know what is in the ring and what is on it, or you want the people who sold it to answer when something goes wrong.

What we left out, and why

  • Sterling silver bands from Warren James, H Samuel, Beaverbrooks, Wedding Rings Direct, Temple & Grace and Serge DeNimes — they are sterling silver, and the title promises rings that are not. Their prices are in the next section, read from their own pages on 13 October 2026, so you can see the gap and where they win.
  • Silver-plated and “silver-tone” fashion rings — Google Shopping showed a silver-plated stainless steel band at £18 and a silver-tone ring at £12 from high-street fashion chains on 13 October 2026. The listings do not say how thick the plating is, and the pages would not load for us, so we could not verify them.
  • Beaverbrooks’ titanium men’s rings (£75 to £80) — we read the prices on the category page on 13 October 2026 but could not open a product page to verify the grade or finish.
  • Ernest Jones — its men’s silver ring pages would not load for us by any route on 13 October 2026, so nothing from it is verified here.
  • Our own Knight, Stunner, Titan and Scout — good rings, left out to keep the list to ten. The Knight comes in 8mm only; the Titan and Scout are titanium with 155 and 152 reviews, and sit beside the Resolve and Tranquil in our silver collection.

What does sterling silver cost, and what do you give up?

How much is a men's sterling silver wedding ring in the UK?

A plain sterling men’s band ran from £72.39 to £275 on the pages we read on 13 October 2026, and the high-street chains sat between £85 and £275.
Warren James’ sterling men’s band was £85, reduced from £95 against a quoted RRP of £170 (Warren James). H Samuel’s 4mm super heavy court was £129, its 5mm textured band £199, and its 6mm polished ridge edge £229 (H Samuel).
Beaverbrooks’ 5mm men’s silver ring was £275, and its own spec line says the silver is “Rhodium Plated” (Beaverbrooks).
Two online makers were cheaper. Wedding Rings Direct’s sterling court bands started at £72.39 for a 4mm band, with a 2mm band at £63.99 (Wedding Rings Direct). Temple & Grace’s men’s silver category started at £76, though its product pages default to white gold (Temple & Grace). Serge DeNimes’ silver rings started at £95, with its engraved, stone-set 4mm Patriot band at £110.
Against that, every Newman Bands ring on this list is between £48 and £64. That is the “fraction of the price” Alan means: from about three-quarters of the cheapest high-street band to a quarter of the dearest. Against a £12 to £18 fashion ring (Google Shopping, 13 October 2026) it is not cheaper, and we do not claim to be.
Alan’s reading of the gap: “We buy direct from craftspeople and pass these savings on. Regular retail prices would be much closer to £100 or more.”

Which is better for a man who works with his hands?

The hardest test we have on record is Gareth’s Champion, shown with our best seller above. Months of motorway work and truck maintenance, a triathlon and fishing, and in his words “not a single scratch or blemish on the ring” (email to Alan, 28 November 2025).
A sterling band would not have come through that unmarked. Silver is 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, soft enough to mark with a fingernail. Tungsten carbide is 9. Almost nothing in a toolbox or a kitchen is harder than the ring.

Why does silver tarnish, and what does polishing do?

Silver tarnishes because sulphur compounds in the air, such as hydrogen sulphide, react with the surface to form a thin black film of silver sulphide. The Canadian Conservation Institute, which looks after silver for museums, says in its note on the care of silver that the film “can quickly destroy the surface lustre of silver”.
Polishing is not free either. The same note says every polish “takes away a certain amount of underlying silver along with the surface layer of tarnish”, and that polishes “leave behind a pattern of fine scratches”. A sterling band gets thinner every time it gets bright.
The sellers know this. Wedding Rings Direct’s own page says “silver naturally tarnishes, so you will need to keep your ring fresh with a silver polishing cloth”. Warren James sells tarnish resistance as “an added benefit” on its £85 band. Temple & Grace offers unlimited rhodium re-plating “for the life of the jewellery”, which tells you the plating wears.
Tungsten carbide and titanium do not tarnish. In our experience, soap, sweat and seawater do not mark them in normal wear.

Is sterling silver hallmarked?

Usually, but not always. Under the Hallmarking Act 1973, calling a ring “sterling” is a claim that it is silver of 925 parts in a thousand (Hallmarking Act 1973, Schedule 1). Selling an unhallmarked article as silver is an offence.
The same schedule exempts any silver article weighing under 7.78 grams, so a light “925” band can legally carry no hallmark at all. A plain 6mm sterling band is around 8 grams; a thin one is under the limit.
None of our rings can be hallmarked, because none contains a precious metal. The Act allows a description “confined to the colour of the article”, which is why ours are silver-coloured tungsten and titanium, and why we say so.

What does sterling silver genuinely do better?

Three things, and we would rather list them than have you find out later.
It can be resized. A jeweller can stretch or cut a sterling band; nobody can resize tungsten or titanium. It is not always free: Wedding Rings Direct charges £35 to £65, Temple & Grace resizes free for life, and Beaverbrooks says there are “certain types of rings that we are unable to re-size” (all read 13 October 2026).
Our answer is the free, unlimited size exchange, which around 30% of our customers use at least once.
It can be cut off quickly. A soft-metal ring comes off in A&E with an ordinary ring cutter. Tungsten carbide is cracked off with locking pliers, and titanium needs an electric cutter: about four minutes on average across tungsten, titanium and steel rings with the best of the four cutters tested in a 2026 Canadian emergency-department trial. Our guide on cutting off a tungsten ring explains how it is done.
It has scrap value. Honestly, not much. Silver was about £45 an ounce on 13 October 2026 (Chards), which puts about £10 of silver in an 8-gram sterling band before any scrap discount. A tungsten or titanium ring has none.

What happens when you lose it?

Rings get lost, and a cheaper ring is less to lose. Alan, from the returns desk: “Some don’t want the risk of losing another expensive band. Some outgrow their original ring, and it’s just as cheap to get a new ring from us.”
Our silver-ring reviews say the same. One customer lost his original wedding ring “in the sea” after nearly 30 years and replaced it with a £48 titanium ring. Another lost his “at work” and replaced it with a Zen at “1/3 of the price”. A third lost hers and bought the Elie Thin Style.

How to choose a silver-coloured ring

Tungsten or titanium?

Tungsten, unless you have a reason not to. Alan’s rule: “Tungsten is better than titanium and we have far less issues with tungsten rings. I would only go for titanium if you are allergic to tungsten or need a lightweight ring.”
The two reasons are real. Our tungsten carbide is bound with nickel, and in our experience roughly one customer in a thousand reports a reaction; those customers switch to titanium, which is nickel-free by specification.
Bar chart of what Newman Bands silver-coloured rings weigh on a Salter scale: 16 g for the 8mm Elie, Champion and Zen in tungsten down to 3 g for the 6mm Resolve and Tranquil in titanium
What our silver-coloured rings weigh, on Alan's Salter scale, 14 October 2026, one size per ring.
On our scale a titanium ring weighs about a quarter to a third of a tungsten one in the same width, which one Scout buyer preferred after a tungsten ring “felt too heavy or tight as the day wore on”. Most people go the other way: customers “soon get used to the slight extra weight. It’s only a few grams.”

Polished or brushed?

Polished if you want the ring to catch the light; brushed if you want it to hide a working week. A polished tungsten ring stays polished because almost nothing is hard enough to mark it.
A brushed finish forgives the odd hard scrape on any metal, because a new fine line vanishes among the old ones. On titanium, which marks more easily, brushed is the safer choice, and the Tranquil has slightly more reviews than the Resolve.

4mm, 6mm or 8mm?

Nine in ten of the rings we send out are 6mm or 8mm, split almost evenly. The 6mm is the classic wedding-band width and suits most hands. The 8mm reads bolder and suits a larger hand or a wide finger. The 4mm is about one in ten, chosen for a slim finger, a first ring, or a matching pair. If you are between two widths, order both and send one back free.

What if it doesn't fit?

You swap it. Tungsten and titanium cannot be resized, so we exchange instead: free, unlimited, until it fits. Around 30% of our customers use the exchange at least once.
If you do not know your size, choose “I don’t know my ring size” at the checkout and a free sizer comes first; about one buyer in thirteen does. Returns for any other reason are free for 100 days on any ring that has not been engraved.

Can a man wear a silver wedding band?

Yes, and about half of the rings we send out are silver-coloured, so it is the most common choice we see. A silver-coloured band also sits beside a partner’s white gold or platinum ring without clashing.

What Our Customers Say

“After having had two wedding bands from a high street jewellers. One being my ideal ring, but got scuffed so easily and the white gold part of the ring lost its rhodium plating so quickly, I took it back and swapped for a different one. But this was also bad for scuffs and marring and lost its shine very quickly. Came across Newman bands via Google and saw they had the Paradox ring that was 99% like my original ring, but no white gold in sight!”
Stephen Kitney, Gillingham

“Amazingly quick dispatch. Looks just as good, if not better than the Silver/Gold one of a similar design that I'd been considering buying from one of the big name jewellers (Warren James/H/Samuel), and was about 20% of the price! The weight of the tungsten is great too and makes you feel like you're wearing something significant but it's not crazy heavy.”
Nathan Lawrence, Hackney

“Bought as a replacement after I lost my original wedding ring in the sea. Very pleased with all aspects of the purchase, from advice regarding the sizing (it had been nearly 30 years since the original purchase), to the delivery, and then to the ring itself. Very good value for money, a sturdy produce and excellent service. And great that this is a small company.”

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A silver tungsten ring is tungsten carbide with a silver-coloured PVD finish, and the metal underneath is itself grey, which is why a scratch shows far less than on a gold-coloured ring. The same is true of our silver-coloured titanium rings. Neither contains any silver, so neither can be hallmarked, which is part of why they cost £48 to £64 rather than £85 to £275.
On 13 October 2026 a plain sterling men’s band cost from £72.39 (4mm) at Wedding Rings Direct to £275 at Beaverbrooks, with the high-street chains at £85 to £275. A silver-coloured tungsten or titanium ring from Newman Bands is £48 to £64, and the two silver tungsten bands we read on Amazon were £27.99 and £31.99.
No. Tarnish is silver sulphide, a reaction between silver and sulphur in the air, and there is no silver in the ring. In our experience, water, soap and sweat do not mark tungsten carbide, titanium or the PVD finish in normal wear. What marks a silver-coloured tungsten ring is a hard scrape on a sharp edge, and the grey metal underneath makes even that hard to see.
Heavier than silver, and much heavier than titanium. On our scale the 6mm Elie is 11 g and the 8mm 16 g, against 3 g and 4 g for the titanium Resolve. Ring-grade tungsten carbide is about a third denser than silver, so a 6mm tungsten band feels like a slightly heavier silver one; a titanium band of the same size feels like almost nothing. Most people soon stop noticing the weight, in Alan’s experience.
No. Neither metal can be resized by any jeweller, which is why we exchange instead: free and unlimited, until the size is right. Sterling silver can be resized, usually for a fee, which is its one clear practical advantage.
Three. They cannot be resized, so the size has to be right, which is what the free exchange is for. They are brittle rather than bendy, so a very hard knock can crack one where silver would dent. And the colour is a finish over grey metal, so a deep scrape at an edge can mark it; because the base is grey, it shows far less than on a gold-coloured ring.
Yes, but not with a standard ring cutter. Tungsten carbide rings are removed by cracking them with locking pliers; titanium rings are cut with an electric ring cutter. Tell the hospital what the ring is made of. Our guide on cutting off a tungsten ring explains how it is done.
