Alan has overseen more than 100,000 ring orders since founding Newman Bands alongside Clare MacLachlan. Newman Bands is the trading name of Manzora Ltd, founded in Horsham, West Sussex in 2001. The business has sold rings since 2019, with every design and size held in stock in the UK โ€” most orders arrive within one to two days of dispatch. Alan personally answers customer queries on metal selection and ring choice every week. Newman Bands has over 10,000 verified five-star reviews on Trustpilot and Reviews.io.

For daily wear durability, titanium is significantly better than silver. Titanium is harder, lighter, does not tarnish, and requires zero maintenance. Silver is softer, tarnishes readily, and needs regular care. But silver has traditional styles and a price point suiting occasional wear. Here is the honest comparison.
Newman Bands sells titanium and tungsten. We do not sell sterling silver. We sell silver-coloured titanium and tungsten rings, which carry the same visual appeal without the maintenance burden. Customers regularly come to us after finding silver falls short of their expectations for daily wear.

The Silver Tarnishing Reality

Sterling silver is 92.5% (hence known as 925 silver) silver and 7.5% copper. The copper reacts with sulphur compounds in air and in sweat to form silver sulphide, a dark compound coating the surface. Left unwashed, a silver ring worn daily can turn yellow, then brown.

Storage makes no difference: A silver ring kept in a drawer still tarnishes from air exposure alone. Worn daily, skin contact accelerates the process.
Maintenance burden: Anti-tarnish polishing cloths and silica gel storage pouches reduce tarnishing. They add a maintenance routine titanium does not require.
The most common reason men switch from silver to titanium is maintenance fatigue. They wanted a ring they could forget about. Silver does not allow that.

Silver and Green Skin

Sterling silver can stain the skin beneath the ring green. This comes from the copper in the alloy, not from the silver itself. Copper reacts with skin oils and sweat to form copper salts, which transfer to the skin. The discolouration is temporary and harmless, but visible and off-putting.
Who is most affected: People with higher skin acidity. More common in warm weather and during physical activity when sweating increases.
Titanium: Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V is fully biocompatible. No copper content. No reaction with skin. Zero reports of skin discolouration.

Where Silver Still Has a Place

Silver suits certain buyers and purposes well. These are genuine advantages, not consolations.
Traditional styles: Signet rings, Celtic knot designs, and family crest rings have centuries of heritage in silver. For cultural or traditional reasons, silver is often the historically correct material.

Price: Silver rings are often more expensive than a Titanium ring. But they often have a resale value, but titanium rings don’t.

Resizability: Any jeweller can resize a silver ring. Titanium cannot be resized by any jeweller. If your size changes, a new ring is required.
Silver worn occasionally, stored properly, and polished when needed performs well enough for its purpose. The problem arises when men buy silver expecting it to behave like a low-maintenance daily wear ring. It does not.

Silver-Coloured Titanium: A Note

Newman Bands sells silver-coloured titanium rings. Plain Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V titanium has a natural silver-grey appearance very similar to sterling silver. It does not tarnish, requires zero maintenance, and does not scratch from keys, tools, or daily contact. If you want the silver look without the silver maintenance burden, plain titanium is the direct alternative.

Our titanium specification is Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V, confirmed from our supplier. The natural colour is a cool, clean grey that reads as silver in most settings.ย

It is worth noting that most titanium rings you see are plated ontop of the titanium to achieve a brushed, polished or coloured finish.

The Verdict

Choose titanium for daily wear. If maintenance-free performance, no tarnishing, lightweight comfort, and no green skin suit your life, titanium is the better daily wear choice.
Choose silver for traditional styles, occasional wear, or when budget is the primary driver. A signet ring or family crest ring in silver has a heritage and cultural weight titanium does not carry.
TITANIUM VS SILVER: SUMMARY
Titanium wins on hardness, tarnish resistance, maintenance, and skin safety.
Silver wins on traditional styles, resizability, and price for occasional wear.
The most common reason men switch: maintenance fatigue with silver.
Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V is Newman Bands' confirmed supplier specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

For daily wear: yes. Titanium is harder, lighter, tarnish-free, and needs no maintenance. For traditional styles such as signet or family crest rings, silver may suit better culturally and aesthetically.
No. Titanium does not tarnish at all. Silver requires regular polishing to prevent tarnish from building up. The passive oxide layer on titanium prevents any surface discolouration.
Yes. Titanium is significantly lighter than sterling silver for the same ring dimensions. Men who want a ring they barely notice on the finger often prefer titanium for this reason.
No. Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V titanium is biocompatible and does not react with skin. It contains no copper. Sterling silver can cause green discolouration due to its copper alloy content reacting with skin oils.
