The 10 Best Gold Rings for Men That Aren't Solid Gold (2026)
Alan has overseen more than 100,000 ring orders since founding Newman Bands with Clare. Newman Bands is the trading name of Manzora Ltd, incorporated in 2001; it has sold men's rings since 2019, with every design and size held in stock in the UK and same-day dispatch on orders before 5pm — most orders arrive within one to two days. Alan personally answers customer queries on metal selection and ring choice every week. Newman Bands has more than 15,000 verified customer reviews — rated 4.99 out of 5 on Reviews.io and 5.0 on Trustpilot.
Short answer: a gold-coloured tungsten or titanium ring is not solid gold. It is a grey metal under a thin, very hard gold-coloured coating. It costs a fraction of a 9ct band, shrugs off the scratches that mark gold, and costs far less to lose. Trade-offs: no resizing, no scrap value, edge wear after years of hard use. In Alan’s experience tungsten holds its colour better than titanium.
How we chose these ten
Try any Newman Bands ring on this list at home, risk free. If you don’t like it, send it back free for a full refund. Within 100 days, unless it has been engraved. Size exchanges are free and unlimited.
1. Best overall: The King — £64 at Newman Bands
What we like
- A full, warm gold tone over a classic polished dome, the shape most people picture when they say "gold wedding ring"
- The weight of tungsten carbide: 12 g in 6mm and 15 g in 8mm on our scale; one reviewer called it "heavier than expected", and Alan says you stop noticing it after a few days
- 6mm in 21 sizes from K to Z5; 8mm in 17 sizes from O to Z5
- Our most-reviewed yellow-gold-coloured ring
What we don’t like
- The colour is a coating, so a hard scrape on a sharp edge can show grey underneath
- One reviewer found the gold "slightly richer and darker than real gold"; judge it at home, with a free return and full refund within 100 days if it is not for you (unless engraved)
- Tungsten cannot be resized, so the size has to be right first time
About one in five of the rings we send out is gold-coloured, and the King is our most-reviewed yellow-gold-coloured ring. It is the one Alan chose for the top of this guide. It is tungsten carbide with a gold-coloured PVD coating, not solid gold.
On the hand, the question is whether anyone can tell. Alan's answer: "most people cannot tell the difference even when you look close, and certainly not on your hand if you're having a coffee."
The polished dome does two things a brushed ring does not. It catches light from every angle, and it hides nothing, so the richness of the colour is the whole point. One reviewer put the honest version well: the gold is "slightly richer and darker than real gold, but well within range to not stand out".
Price is the other reason people land here. One customer bought the 8mm for a dad whose wedding band had snapped, "unlike other ones we looked at being £300".
Tungsten carbide is the hardest metal we sell, Mohs 9, and the decorative PVD films coating houses publish are harder still. That is why a King worn daily by someone who works with their hands keeps its shine where a gold band picks up marks.
The limit is the coating's thickness: at most a couple of thousandths of a millimetre. A deep scrape on a sharp edge can cut through to the grey metal. Alan's experience with our coated tungsten rings: "We don't get many issues, but the most common is unlucky scrapes against hard surfaces." When it happens we look after the customer, as our reviews show.
If it does not fit, you exchange it for another size free of charge, as many times as it takes. That is our answer to tungsten being impossible to resize.
What customers say about it:
“This ring looks the real business. Looks like gold but so much more durable and cost effective. Can't praise this company enough, the best customer service and quick delivery.”
Andrew England, Wellingborough · verified five-star review
“Lovely ring, heavier than expected. Perfect for a man that works with their hands.”
Chloe Rowett, Croydon · verified five-star review
2. Best brushed gold: The Eloquent — £60 at Newman Bands
What we like
- A brushed centre hides the fine marks a polished ring shows, which is the advice Warren James gives for its own solid gold bands
- The polished edges keep the shine, so it reads as gold rather than as a matte band
- 6mm in 15 sizes from N to Z2; 8mm in 17 sizes from O to Z5
- Bought twice by one reviewer, whose boyfriend wore the first every day for three years
What we don’t like
- No 4mm version under this name; the 4mm ring is the Eloquent Thin Style
- The colour is a coating over grey tungsten, so a deep scrape can show through
- Cannot be resized
- If any of that puts you off, try it at home: free return and full refund within 100 days, unless engraved
Warren James' own page for its solid gold bands says a smooth band "will get marked or look dirty after a short time", and recommends a brushed finish. The Eloquent is that advice applied to a ring far harder than gold in the first place. The brushed centre takes the daily knocks. The polished bevels do the shining.
It is a gold-coloured PVD coating over tungsten carbide, not solid gold. The colour is warm and even from edge to edge. The film goes on in a vacuum chamber, deposited onto the whole surface of the ring rather than painted or dipped.
One customer bought it twice. Her boyfriend wore the first one every day for three years and "it was still in perfect condition" when he lost it. She bought the same ring again. That is the cheapest possible argument against wearing solid gold every day.
What customers say about it:
“he loved it so much I had to get the same one!”
Madeleine Hegney, Cardiff · verified five-star review
“For the price it is an absolute must, the quality is fab the colour and thickness is all great! Delivery was also super quick, came within 2 days of ordering so I was extremely happy with that!”
Emily Thomson, London · verified five-star review
3. Best under £50: The Graceful — £48 at Newman Bands
What we like
- The cheapest gold-coloured ring we sell, and one of our top five rings by the number we send out
- Titanium is light: 4 g in 6mm on our scale, a third of the 12 g King; a reviewer who replaced a gold ring lost on holiday said the weight was "not really a negative"
- Nickel-free Grade 5 titanium, so it is the ring we point to if a gold ring ever gave you a rash
- 4mm in 17 sizes from K to Z1; 6mm in 19 sizes from K to Z3
What we don’t like
- In Alan's experience the coating on titanium is not as hard-wearing as the coating on tungsten
- No 8mm width
- Lighter than gold on the hand, so it does not feel like a gold ring
- If any of that puts you off, try it at home: free return and full refund within 100 days, unless engraved
The Graceful is a polished gold-coloured dome in titanium, not solid gold, and the one we recommend when the budget is under £50 or the wearer wants a ring he forgets he has on. On our scale the 6mm Graceful is 4 g against 12 g for the 6mm King: a third of the weight.
Alan is straightforward about the trade: he would recommend tungsten over titanium every time unless you are allergic to tungsten, because the plating on tungsten is harder. Our tungsten is bonded with nickel, so a diagnosed nickel allergy is the one case where titanium wins outright. Grade 5 titanium is nickel-free by specification.
The reviews tell the same story from the other side. One customer wrote that he "saved on the big expense on a higher grade metal". Another replaced a gold ring lost on holiday and found that "no one can tell the difference".
What customers say about it:
“no one can tell the difference with my old ring that I lost on holiday.”
Paul A Birch · verified five-star review
“Really pleased with my ring, looks the part, very well made and saved on the big expense on a higher grade metal. Very happy”
Chris Downing · verified five-star review
4. Best thin band: The King Thin Style — £64 at Newman Bands
What we like
- The King's polished gold tone in a 4mm band, a slim width for a man who has always worn a thin ring
- A reviewer on the tools for a week: "I can't believe there isn't a scratch on it"
- 18 sizes from K to Z2
- The most-reviewed 4mm gold-coloured ring we sell
What we don’t like
- 4mm only; if you want 6mm or 8mm, buy the King
- Sizes stop at Z2
- The colour is a coating, and the same edge-wear caveat applies
- If any of that puts you off, try it at home: free return and full refund within 100 days, unless engraved
Reviewers have bought this ring to replace a lost wedding band, and to replace an old gold one. It is gold-coloured PVD over tungsten carbide, not solid gold, so the cost of losing it is £64 rather than the price of a 9ct band.
One customer put it exactly: he wanted "a replacement for my wedding ring (unfortunately lost!) and this was a perfect, much cheaper alternative". Another wears it at work in place of his wedding band because it will take the knocks.
A 4mm tungsten ring is a thin ring in a brittle material. It is far harder than gold, but tungsten carbide cracks rather than bends under a very hard impact, so a thin band has less material to absorb one. In Alan's words, "they are strong, but brittle like any other tungsten ring." We look after customers when it happens.
What customers say about it:
“Absolutely love the ring. Wanted a replacement for my wedding ring (unfortunately lost!) and this was a perfect, much cheaper alternative. Process of having a ring sizer sent first then the ring sent a few days later was really good. Overall very happy thank you!”
Alex Gravell, Teignmouth · verified five-star review
“Needed a strong and sturdy ring that would withstand my hands on job, and after a week with it on the tools it's held up fantastically. I can't believe there isn't a scratch on it. It's the perfect ring to swap out with my wedding band for when I'm at work.”
Hayden Littlejohn · verified five-star review
5. Best two-tone: The Paradox — £60 at Newman Bands
What we like
- Gold and silver on one ring, which suits a man whose watch and wedding ring never agreed on a colour
- A reviewer who bought it as a replacement wedding ring: "You can't even tell looking at it that it's not gold!"
- 6mm in 16 sizes from N to Z3; 8mm in 14 sizes from P to Z3
- Comfortable enough for DIY, according to a reviewer's husband
What we don’t like
- Two colours means two finishes to keep: the gold section is a coating and a deep scrape shows grey
- Cannot be resized
- Busier than a plain band, so it is not the ring for a minimalist
- If any of that puts you off, try it at home: free return and full refund within 100 days, unless engraved
The Paradox puts a polished silver-coloured section through a polished gold-coloured tungsten band. It is not solid gold and it is not solid silver: both colours sit on tungsten carbide. On the hand it reads as a two-tone gold ring of the kind jewellers sell in 9ct and white gold.
Two-tone is a matter of taste, and our reviews are emphatic about this one. One customer bought it as a replacement wedding ring and wrote, "You can't even tell looking at it that it's not gold!" Another said it "looks so much more expensive than it was".
The same caveat applies as to every coated ring: the colour is a thin, very hard film. A sharp edge dragged hard across it can cut through. Alan's returns-desk summary is "normally it's fine, but sometimes you just get unlucky", and we look after you if it happens.
What customers say about it:
“Beautiful quality ring! I bought for my husband as a replacement wedding ring and it's stunning! You can't even tell looking at it that it's not gold!”
Rebecca Coombs, Redruth · verified five-star review
“Beautiful ring. Looks and feels like good quality and looks so much more expensive than it was. Husband actually finds it comfortable to wear even when fiddling about with DIY.”
Helen Hall, Manchester · verified five-star review
6. Best white gold look: The Legacy — £58 at Newman Bands
What we like
- The white gold look without the rhodium coating a solid white gold ring relies on
- A reviewer who compared it to the high street: "much better quality than a high street jewellers"
- 6mm in 15 sizes from N to Z2; 8mm in 14 sizes from P to Z3
- "Heavy, high quality, brilliant shine", in a reviewer's words
What we don’t like
- A newer design, so it has fewer reviews than the King or the Eloquent
- The white tone is a coating on grey tungsten; a deep scrape shows a slightly darker grey
- Cannot be resized
- If any of that puts you off, try it at home: free return and full refund within 100 days, unless engraved
Solid white gold is usually coated with rhodium to look white. Beaverbrooks' aftercare FAQ even carries the question "How long does rhodium coating last?" (Beaverbrooks FAQ). THM's resizing guide says white gold "must be re-plated with rhodium" when it is sized up (THM).
The Legacy is a white-gold-coloured PVD coating over tungsten carbide, not solid gold. There is no rhodium layer to wear through, only the PVD film itself.
The finish is a polished shine, brighter than the brushed grey of a plain tungsten ring. One customer called it "heavy, high quality, brilliant shine". Another said it "feels more expensive than it actually is".
If 6mm is too wide, the same design exists at 4mm as the Legacy Thin Style, also £58 and 7 g on our scale.
What customers say about it:
“Really happy with both the quality of the ring and the customer service. The white gold colour on this ring is beautiful and the 6mm is a great classic man's wedding band width. Would absolutely recommend this company.”
Fabienne Gilbraith, Stalybridge · verified five-star review
“Ring is fantastic and feels more expensive than it actually is. Much better quality than a high street jewellers”
Daniel McGuicken · verified five-star review
7. Best rose gold look: The Dapper — £58.99 at Newman Bands
What we like
- "Looks and feels just like rose gold", in a reviewer's words
- A warm, coppery tone, which is what rose gold buyers usually want
- 15 sizes from N to Z2
- A reviewer seven months in reported "no tarnish or scratches"
What we don’t like
- 6mm only
- The colour is coppery rather than pale pink; one reviewer wanted exactly that, but check the photos
- Cannot be resized
- If any of that puts you off, try it at home: free return and full refund within 100 days, unless engraved
Rose gold is the colour we sell least of, about one ring in twenty-five, and the one whose colour reviewers remark on, so we quote them. The Dapper is a rose-gold-coloured PVD coating on tungsten carbide, not solid rose gold, and the reviews are unusually specific about the colour: "quite a coppery colour which is what we were after".
On a solid rose gold ring the colour runs through the metal, and the metal is soft. On the Dapper the colour is a coating at most a couple of thousandths of a millimetre thick, and the tungsten under it is harder than any gold alloy. Which you prefer depends on whether you would rather own the metal or keep the finish.
If it does not fit, the free size exchange covers it. One reviewer "exchanged for a size up" because the first was snug.
What customers say about it:
“Very nice ring, looks and feels just like rose gold”
Martin Kern, Garstang · verified five-star review
“I purchased a wedding band (Men's Tungsten Wedding Ring, Rose Gold) 7 months ago, and I recommend this business. The ring is of super quality, with no tarnish or scratches, and is well worth the price.”
Opeyemi Ajose · verified five-star review
8. Best if you want a guarantee for life: The Axis — £220 at Wolf&Bond
What we like
- A guarantee for life against manufacturing defects and structural failure, which we do not offer
- 90 days to return for any reason, and 90 days to exchange a size or style
- Brushed gold with a single recessed inlay, a clean design
What we don’t like
- £220 for a tungsten ring, three and a half times the price of our King (both prices read 9 Oct 2026)
- 4mm and 6mm only; the 8mm page returned a 404 on 9 Oct 2026
- Delivery is charged at £3.50 for Royal Mail Tracked 48, and orders are dispatched on Mondays or Thursdays (shipping policy, read 9 Oct 2026)
- £4.50 is deducted from a refund on a metal ring towards return postage (refund policy, read 9 Oct 2026)
- The guarantee does not cover "plated, coloured, coated or treated finishes fading, chipping, marking or wearing over time" (guarantee page, read 8 Oct 2026)
- The product page does not say how the gold colour is applied (read 9 Oct 2026)
Wolf&Bond's Axis is a brushed gold-coloured tungsten band with a recessed inlay, £220 in every size. The label it wins is the guarantee, marketed as lifetime cover, because Newman Bands does not offer one. Our stack is 100-day free returns and free, unlimited size exchanges.
Read the guarantee before you pay for it. It covers manufacturing defects and structural failure under normal wear. Its own page then lists what it excludes, including coated finishes "fading, chipping, marking or wearing over time" and damage during gym, sport or manual work. The gold colour on this ring is exactly such a finish.
The product page describes the ring as "polished tungsten carbide" with "a single recessed inlay". It does not say what the gold colour is or how thick it is.
Alan's view on rings at this price: you often pay for what you get. Here, though, you are paying for a guarantee that excludes the one thing this guide warns about on every coated ring.
9. Best if you want to try it on in a shop: Artizano gold tone titanium — £69 at Warren James
What we like
- More than 200 shops nationwide, so you can try a gold-tone titanium ring on before you buy
- Free standard UK delivery on this ring, in stock with next-day delivery offered on 9 Oct 2026
- A brushed 7mm profile, a sensible everyday width
What we don’t like
- Sizes Q to Z only: ten sizes, against 19 for our 6mm Graceful (product page, read 9 Oct 2026)
- Website exchanges are only in a store, "exchanges cannot be processed by post" (exchange and refund policy, read 9 Oct 2026)
- Refunds must be requested within 28 days and you pay the return postage (same page)
- The description says "Hand Finished in a rich Gold tone" and does not say how the gold tone is applied
- 7mm only
Warren James' Artizano is a brushed gold-tone titanium band. It was £69 on 9 October 2026, marked down from a £119 RRP. The label it wins is the one a website cannot: you can walk into one of its shops, put it on, and walk out with it.
The flip side is the same shops. If you buy online and the size is wrong, the exchange happens in a branch, not by post, and a refund has to be requested within 28 days with the postage on you. Our size exchange is free, unlimited, and done by post.
Titanium is the lighter metal, and in Alan's experience the gold coating on titanium does not wear as well as the coating on tungsten. The product page describes the finish as "Hand Finished in a rich Gold tone" and says nothing about what that finish is. The honest comparison is our Graceful: titanium, gold-coloured, £48, 19 sizes in 6mm.
10. Best if price is all that matters: King Will GLORY — £34.99 on Amazon
What we like
- £34.99 on 9 October 2026, the cheapest gold-coloured tungsten ring on this list
- 4mm, 6mm or 8mm, and a rose gold option
- Amazon's 30-day free returns apply
- 4.5 stars from 5,535 ratings on 9 Oct 2026
What we don’t like
- The listing title says "Gold RoseGold Plated"; it gives no thickness for the plating
- Sold by a marketplace seller, "UP EU", not by Amazon (listing, read 9 Oct 2026)
- The brand's warranty wording differs between its own listings: 180 days on this one, 30 days on another King Will listing we read on 8 Oct 2026
- After Amazon's 30-day window you depend on the seller's own warranty wording, which differs between its listings
The King Will GLORY is a polished domed tungsten ring with a gold plating, £34.99 on Amazon on 9 October 2026. If the only question is price, it is the answer, and the listing is honest that the gold is plated.
What the listing does not say is how thick that plating is, and the warranty promise changes from one King Will listing to the next. The seller is a marketplace trader. Amazon's 30-day returns cover a wrong size. After that you depend on the seller's warranty wording, which on this listing says it includes sizing and on another says 30 days.
Alan's view: you often pay for what you get. If you do not care about quality and just want a cheap ring, this one will probably fit the bill, but do not expect a quality ring at that price.
If you care about the gift you are giving, it is worth paying the extra. Buy from a quality jeweller like Newman Bands, with the reviews and the returns policy to back it up.
What we left out, and why
- Solid gold bands from Beaverbrooks, Goldsmiths, F.Hinds and Wedding Rings Direct — they are solid gold, and the title promises rings that are not. Their prices are in the next section, read from their own pages on 9 October 2026, so you can see the gap.
- T.H. Baker’s Unique & Co gold-plated tungsten 6mm band (£64) — the same price as our King on 9 October 2026, described as “a lustrous gold-tone plating”, sold in European sizes 60 to 66; the brushed version was out of stock the same day.
- HusBands 8mm gold tungsten band (£65 on 9 October 2026) — the product page’s spec line says “Plated Tungsten with Polished Finish” and gives no thickness; one free size exchange, then 30-day returns.
- BestToHave gold-tone tungsten (£48.33 sale price, 9 October 2026) — the spec line says “Gold Plated” with no thickness; free delivery only over £95; 30-day returns.
- Vincent Faith gold tungsten rings (£29.99 to £39.99, 9 October 2026) — a fair 90-day returns policy and free delivery, but the pages describe the finish only as “polished gold plated”, with no thickness, and the court profile runs from 2mm to 8mm.
- Our own Regent, Guardian, Valour, Aurum and Together — good rings, left out to keep the list to ten; the Regent at £53 is our cheapest plain gold-coloured tungsten band (the Splendour, hammered gold-coloured tungsten with an antler inlay, is £51).
