Alan has overseen more than 100,000 ring orders since founding Newman Bands alongside Clare MacLachlan. Newman Bands is the trading name of Manzora Ltd, founded in Horsham, West Sussex in 2001. The business has sold rings since 2019, with every design and size held in stock in the UK โ€” most orders arrive within one to two days of dispatch. Alan personally answers customer queries on metal selection and ring choice every week. Newman Bands has over 10,000 verified five-star reviews on Trustpilot and Reviews.io.

Titanium rings are the lightweight choice among men’s ring metals. Strong, hypoallergenic, and easy to wear. They have real limitations too. Here is the full, honest breakdown.

We sell both tungsten and titanium from Horsham, West Sussex, and have fulfilled over 100,000 orders. Titanium accounts for about 30% of our sales. These pros and cons come from years of real orders and customer conversations.

The Pros of Titanium Rings

Titanium rings are exceptionally lightweight, hypoallergenic, corrosion-resistant, and harder than gold. Colours including black, blue, and gold-tone are achieved through IP/PVD coating. For men who want a ring they barely notice wearing, titanium is often the ideal choice.

Advantage The Detail
Exceptionally lightweight About 60% lighter than tungsten for the same ring size. A 6mm titanium ring weighs 3-5g vs 10-14g for tungsten. For men new to wearing rings, the light feel means almost no adaptation period.
Hypoallergenic Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) is an aerospace-grade alloy. Biocompatible and safe for all skin types including metal sensitivities. No known skin reactions.
Corrosion-resistant Titanium forms a passive oxide layer that resists corrosion from sweat, saltwater, and most chemicals under normal wear. No special care required.
Harder than gold and silver Mohs 6 vs gold's 2.5. A titanium ring outlasts a gold ring for surface condition in daily wear by years.
Colour through IP/PVD coating Blue, black, gold-tone achieved through vacuum deposition. A compound bonds to the titanium surface at the atomic level. It does not chip or peel, but wears at high-contact edges over years of heavy use.
Low maintenance No tarnishing. No polishing needed. Soap and water.
Significantly cheaper than gold At ยฃ45-ยฃ75, titanium rings cost a fraction of their gold equivalents, with better durability for daily wear.

The Cons of Titanium Rings

For men who want a mirror finish that never shows any marks, tungsten is the better choice. For men who want to resize significantly, neither titanium nor tungsten will serve as well as gold. Here are the real limitations of titanium, in full.
Disadvantage The Detail How Significant?
Scratches more than tungsten Mohs 6 vs tungsten's 9-9.5. Fine surface scratches develop over years of daily wear on a polished finish. Not dramatic, but real. MEDIUM. Depends on how much a perfect finish matters.
Cannot be resized Cannot be resized. Like tungsten, if the size is not right a new ring must be ordered. Use the Newman Bands free ring sizer before ordering to get the correct size. HIGH. Confirm your exact size before ordering.
PVD colour edge wear On high-contact edges of coloured rings, the PVD coating wears gradually over years of sustained abrasion. The flat face holds colour well. LOW-MEDIUM. Only affects coloured versions.
Feels too light to some men Men transitioning from a gold ring sometimes find titanium feels insubstantial. Entirely subjective. Try it before deciding. LOW. Preference only.
Cannot match tungsten for scratch-proof finish For a ring that shows zero surface wear indefinitely, tungsten is the better choice. LOW-MEDIUM. Depends on priorities.

Are the Cons Dealbreakers?

For most men who choose titanium, no. The scratch issue is real but not dramatic. A titanium ring after years of daily wear looks used and well-maintained, not damaged. The resizing limitation is the most important con to understand.

Scratching: Most men do not notice scratch accumulation on a titanium ring for years. The ring looks lived-in, not damaged.ย

However, if customers ask – I steer them to tungsten rings as the plating on tungsten lasts longer (not just our rings – but on tungsten rings in general). You soon get used to the extra weight of tungsten.

Resizing: Titanium rings cannot be resized by any jeweller. If your size changes, a new ring is required. Measure carefully using the Newman Bands free ring sizer before ordering. Our 100-day return and exchange covers unworn rings for size exchanges.
PVD colour: If you want a plain grey or brushed titanium ring, PVD edge wear is not relevant. If you want a black or blue coloured ring that holds its colour on every edge indefinitely, black tungsten may be marginally more durable due to the harder base metal.

The Technical Detail: IP/PVD Coating and Colour

When people see a blue or black titanium ring, they often ask: what colour is it underneath? The underlying titanium is silver-grey, and all Newman Bands titanium rings โ€” including silver-grey โ€” have an IP/PVD surface coating.
IP/PVD coating (ion plating or physical vapour deposition) deposits a compound onto the ring surface in a vacuum chamber. The coating bonds at the atomic level. By choosing different compounds, different colours can be produced. The coating does not chip or peel under normal conditions.
If the PVD coating wears through at high-contact edges, the underlying titanium grey appears. This happens gradually at the ringโ€™s edges under sustained abrasion over years of heavy use. On the flat face, colour holds well for many years.
โ€œRing is absolutely perfect, it is exactly what we were looking for, for our wedding, my partner loves it and the quality is unmatched.โ€

Frequently Asked Questions

Titanium scratches more than tungsten over years of daily wear. It cannot be resized by any jeweller. PVD colour on high-contact edges may lighten over years of heavy use. None of these are dealbreakers for most men. The most important limitation to know before buying is the cannot-resize constraint.
Yes. Lightweight, biocompatible, harder than gold, and low-maintenance. The best choice for active men, men with sensitive skin, and anyone who values comfort over maximum scratch resistance. Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) is aerospace grade. It will not tarnish, corrode, or react with skin.
Fine scratches develop slowly over years of daily wear. Not easily and not quickly. Far more scratch-resistant than gold at Mohs 2.5 or silver. Less scratch-resistant than tungsten at Mohs 9 to 9.5. The ring looks well-used after years, not damaged.
The metal lasts indefinitely. Titanium does not degrade, tarnish, or corrode. PVD colours on high-contact areas may lighten gradually over years of sustained heavy wear. The ring itself does not wear out. The most common reasons for buying a new ring are a size change or a style preference, not wear.
Yes. Titanium is corrosion-resistant. Shower, swim, and exercise in it without concern. The passive oxide layer on the surface protects it from saltwater, sweat, and most chemicals under normal wear conditions. No special care required.
