Alan has overseen more than 100,000 ring orders since founding Newman Bands with Clare. Newman Bands is the trading name of Manzora Ltd, incorporated in 2001; it has sold men's rings since 2019, with every design and size held in stock in the UK and same-day dispatch on orders before 5pm — most orders arrive within one to two days. Alan personally answers customer queries on metal selection and ring choice every week. Newman Bands has more than 15,000 verified customer reviews — rated 4.99 out of 5 on Reviews.io and 5.0 on Trustpilot.

The best men’s wedding ring engravings are short: a date, both initials, a two-word promise or a place that matters. In a sample of our own engraving orders from the last 13 months, nearly half of the men’s rings carried a date. The phrase Alan sees most is “Always & Forever”, in either order.
This guide gives you ideas that actually fit inside a ring, with the character count for each. It covers what reads well, and what to check before you order.

Short answer: the best engravings are short and personal. A date (12.06.2027 is 10 characters), both initials, map coordinates of where you met, or a two-word promise all fit easily. Newman Bands engraves the inside of the ring, up to 28 characters including spaces. Wider and darker rings show the letters most clearly.

“Getting a ring engraved is a unique way to make it truly yours,” says Alan MacLachlan, who runs Newman Bands with Clare. “Add a special message or just tell someone you love them. It makes the ring that little bit extra special, and I would always recommend it.”

What gets engraved inside men's wedding rings?

Dates come up again and again. We took the same number of engraving orders from every month between September 2025 and September 2026. That stops the busiest months skewing the picture. Then we counted what was on each ring.
  • A date: nearly half of all engravings include one, and about one in eight is nothing but the date.
  • The word “forever”: appears in about one engraving in seven.
  • “Always & Forever”: “our most popular phrase,” says Alan. It is on about one ring in sixteen, counting “Forever & Always” too.
  • A heart symbol: at least one in sixteen.
“Sometimes we get funny phrases,” says Alan. Some are too cheeky to print here.
The typical message is 16 characters long. About one in five uses 25 or more, close to the full space.
Bar chart: what gets engraved inside men's rings in Newman Bands orders. A date 47%, the word forever 15%, Always & Forever 6%, a heart symbol at least 6%.

How we counted. We took an equal sample of engraving orders from each month from September 2025 to September 2026. We sorted each message by pattern (dates, set phrases, symbols) and rounded every figure. A ring can fall into more than one group.
Within each month we took the latest orders plus a batch from mid-month, so it is a spread sample rather than a random one.

Engraving ideas that fit inside a man's ring

Every idea below shows its length, counting letters, numbers, spaces and symbols. Anything up to 28 characters fits a Newman Bands tungsten, titanium or ceramic ring.

The date

A date is the classic choice because it never needs explaining. How you write it changes the length.
How you write itExampleCharacters
Dots, day first12.06.202710
Month as a word12 June 202712
Roman numeralsXII.VI.MMXXVII14
Initials and dateJ & E 12.06.202716
Phrase and short dateAlways & Forever 12.06.2725
Dots are the most popular format on our orders, followed by slashes. Roman numerals look distinctive but are rare: about one date in fifty uses them. The longest Roman date in the next few years, XXVIII.VIII.MMXXVIII, is still only 20 characters.
Write the day first. One US guide we read shows dates month first, such as 5.20.2023. In the UK that reads as nonsense, so use 20.05.2023 or spell out the month.

Short promises

Two to four words carry a lot on a ring. These all fit with room to spare:
  • Always & Forever (16)
  • I choose you (12)
  • Forever yours (13)
  • My person (9)
  • Best day ever (13)
  • Still you. Always you. (22)

Where it happened

Map coordinates turn a place into a secret only you two can read. Written as decimals with four places, a pair runs to about 16–18 characters:
  • 51.0629 N 0.3259 W (18)
  • 51.0629, -0.3259 (16)
Four decimal places pin a spot to within about 11 metres, which is plenty for “where we met”. The degrees-and-minutes format needs extra symbols and runs longer, so the decimal version is the safer fit.

Codes only you know

Morse code. Short words and initials work well. “ILY” (I love you) is .. .-.. -.--, 12 characters with the gaps. Written with a slash between words, the full phrase “I love you” runs to 35 characters, which is over our 28-character limit. On some rings the dots can run together, so keep Morse short.
Initials with a symbol. J ♥ E or J ∞ E takes five characters and suits a narrow band. We can engrave heart emojis and the infinity sign.

For dads

A ring doesn’t have to be a wedding ring. Some customers buy one as a dad ring for Father’s Day, engraved with a child’s date of birth. “Dad 04.03.2026” is 14 characters.

Funny and cheeky

A laugh inside the ring can mean as much as a promise. “Took you long enough” (20) and “Property of Emma” (16) are the gentler end. The full “This man is property of Emma” is exactly 28, the limit.

A 600-year-old idea

Messages inside rings are not new.
The Victoria and Albert Museum records that by 1430, love rings engraved with inscriptions were known as “posies”, from “poesy”, or poetry. Its collection includes a ring inscribed “Keep faith till death”, a posy the museum says was used on a number of rings.
In one V&A record, the museum notes that early posies were mostly engraved on the outside of the ring, while later ones moved inside.

How many characters can you fit inside a ring?

Newman Bands engraves up to 28 characters, including spaces and punctuation. That is the limit on our order form. Other jewellers set their own limits, often per product, so check before you write a long message.
What limits any ring is space. The inside circumference only grows by about 1.3mm with each UK letter size. Our tungsten rings also carry a maker’s mark inside, so your message sits beside it.
One reviewer found a long message came out small. Another “went for less characters so the engraving would be bigger”. If your message is close to 28, try cutting a word.
Shorten, don’t abbreviate oddly. Swap “and” for “&”, use a two-digit year (12.06.27), or drop the full stop at the end.

Will the engraving be easy to read?

Yes, on most rings. The one to think twice about is a thin silver-coloured ring.
We laser engrave in-house. The laser marks the natural colour of the metal, with no black paint filled in. That means contrast depends on the ring:
  • Black interiors show the letters most clearly. One customer said the engraving looked good against a blue interior.
  • 6mm and 8mm silver-coloured rings read well.
  • 4mm silver-coloured rings can be hard to read. “It’s silver on silver and a small font,” says Alan. If the words matter most, choose a wider band or a black interior.
About half the engraved rings in our sample were 8mm, and fewer than one in ten were 4mm.
It is laser engraved, not printed. “You need a special machine to do it,” says Alan of tungsten and titanium. He says most high-street shops can’t engrave them for that reason. Some customers expect a carved groove. It’s a laser mark, so expect a clean line of lettering.
If an engraving comes out faint, or you’re unhappy with it, we refund the engraving fee.

What we can’t engrave: Newman Bands engraves the inside of the ring only, in one clean sans-serif font (Lato), using the Latin alphabet. We can’t engrave silicone rings, the outside of a ring, photos, fingerprints, handwriting, or scripts such as Arabic. If you want one of those, a specialist jeweller is the better route.

Should you engrave the ring straight away or try it on first?

Engrave straight away if you know the size. Alan’s tip: “If you are unsure of your size you should try it on first.”
This matters because engraved rings can’t be returned for a change of mind. UK law treats them as personalised goods: the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 exclude goods that are “clearly personalised” from the usual right to cancel. Your rights on a faulty item still apply.
That is why we offer two routes:
  1. Engrave now. We engrave the ring and send it out the same day. Order before 5pm Monday to Friday, or 11am on Saturday. About seven in ten engraved rings go this way.
  2. Try Ring First. We send the ring plain. You check the fit, then send it back free and we engrave it. About three in ten engraved rings go this way.
Plain rings come with our 100-day free returns, and size exchanges are free and unlimited. Around 30% of our customers need a size exchange. So if there’s any doubt about the size, try it on first.
Buying as a surprise? Our ring size chart and the free ring sizer with a ring order help you get it right first time.

Check your message before you order

We engrave your message exactly as you type it, capitals and all. One problem we see is a message typed in a hurry.
Alan sees people rush their message and misspell names or get dates wrong. Alan’s tip: “Take a couple of seconds and review your message.”
Before you press order:
  • Spell every name letter by letter, especially nicknames.
  • Check the date order is day, month, year.
  • Type capitals only where you want them. “ALWAYS” is engraved in capitals.
  • Count the spaces. They count towards the 28.
A finished engraving can’t be added to later, because new text can’t be lined up with the old. Get it right first time and there’s nothing to fix later.

How much does ring engraving cost?

Engraving costs £15. It is done in-house on our own laser, so an engrave-now ring still goes out the same day.
For comparison, Ernest Jones and H.Samuel both listed engraving the inside of a ring at £30 when we checked on 25 September 2026. Both allow three to eight working days before dispatch.
If you are buying a pair, each ring needs its own engraving.
For how the engraving itself is done, and why tungsten needs a specialist machine, see our guide to how to engrave a tungsten ring.

Later posy rings moved the message inside. Newman Bands engraves the inside only. If you want an outside engraving, you will need a jeweller who offers it for your ring’s metal.
