Alan has overseen more than 100,000 ring orders since founding Newman Bands alongside Clare MacLachlan. Newman Bands is the trading name of Manzora Ltd, founded in Horsham, West Sussex in 2001. The business has sold rings since 2019, with every design and size held in stock in the UK โ€” most orders arrive within one to two days of dispatch. Alan personally answers customer queries on metal selection and ring choice every week. Newman Bands has over 10,000 verified five-star reviews on Trustpilot and Reviews.io.

Quick answer
For most grooms, tungsten is the right choice: harder than titanium, holds its finish longer, and far more durable than gold or silver at a fraction of the price.
Width: smaller fingers suit 6mm; larger fingers usually choose 8mm. But it is a personal choice and many people choose the opposite eg a thinner width on a larger finger.
Get your size right before engraving. Engraved rings cannot be returned under UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
Not sure of your size? Order a free ring sizer or use the Try at Home service first.
Your wedding ring will be the most-worn piece of jewellery you own. It goes on the morning of the wedding and, for most men, it stays on for decades. That changes the calculation compared to buying any other ring. Style matters, but so does how the ring holds up after years of daily wear, in the kitchen, the gym, the office, the garden.
This guide covers everything you need before buying: which metal to choose, what width works for your hand, whether to engrave, how to get the size right, and how to order with confidence. It draws on what we have learned from 100,000+ orders and 10,000+ customer reviews at Newman Bands.
In this guide

The Most Important Decision: Getting Your Size Right

90% of our ring returns come down to one thing: the wrong size. Not dissatisfaction with the ring. Just the size. And this happens even when customers have been measured at a jeweller. Finger size changes throughout the day, with temperature, and with weight change. A reading taken at a jewellery counter on a cold morning may be half a size smaller than your actual fit by evening.
Do not use a piece of string or paper to measure at home. The difference between adjacent ring sizes is less than 1mm. Paper-based methods are not accurate enough. If jewellers get it wrong 30% of the time, there is a good chance you will too with a makeshift method.
How to get your size right, in order of reliability
1. Order our free physical ring sizer. Select "I don't know my ring size" on any product. It often arrives next day.
2. Use our Try at Home service. Try 3 rings at home before committing. ยฃ5 service charge, ยฃ45 refunded on return.
3. Measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits on the same finger of the same hand.
Do NOT use string or paper. Sizes differ by under 1mm and you cannot measure accurately enough.
โ€œSending out a ring sizer is a great addition so you get your ring right first time. Really happy with my ring also.โ€

If you are buying the ring as a surprise, size is the trickiest part. The exchange process exists precisely for this reason. Return the ring within 100 days unworn and we will send the correct size. It is free. Around 30% of all our customers need a size exchange, even those who were professionally measured first.
Important: engraving and returns
Under the UK Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, engraved rings are personalised goods and are exempt from the standard 14-day right to cancel.
An engraved ring cannot be returned or exchanged for a different size.
Confirm your size first. Try the ring on. Send it back free and we will engrave it same day.
Do not engrave until you are certain of the fit.

Which Metal Should Your Wedding Ring Be?

At Newman Bands we sell tungsten, titanium, and silicone rings. For a wedding ring worn every day, the choice almost always comes down to tungsten or titanium. Silicone works well as a practical supplement for men in active or clinical professions, but not as the primary wedding ring.

Tungsten Wedding Rings: The Case for the Most Durable Option

Around 70% of Newman Bands customers choose our tungsten rings, and it is what I recommend when someone asks me directly. The reason is simple: tungsten carbide sits at 9 to 9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Gold sits at 2.5. That gap explains why a tungsten wedding ring looks the same after five years of daily wear while a gold ring shows its age within months.

For a ring you wear every day, through washing up, gym sessions, outdoor work, everything, that durability is not a minor detail. It is the reason the ring still looks good on your 10th anniversary.
โ€œMy son and son in law had their wedding bands from Newman in 2022 and they still look amazing.โ€
Liz Urry, Newport.

โ€œBeen looking for a ring like this to replace my gold wedding band. Very stylish, fits very well and is a good weight. Received compliments on how it looks.โ€
Chris, Ipswich.
Verified Buyer.
Every Newman Bands tungsten ring uses a nickel binder, confirmed from our supplier specification. The alternative, cobalt binder, is the most common cause of skin reactions in tungsten rings sold by cheaper suppliers. We do not use it.

One honest caveat: tungsten is brittle under sharp impact. It will not scratch, but if dropped onto a hard floor or struck against a corner at the wrong angle, it can crack, but it is rare. Men who work in environments involving repeated heavy impacts to the hands should factor this in before choosing tungsten.

โ€œHe works in the construction industry and when I tell you this ring goes through a lot on a daily basis. Great quality, amazing ring.โ€
Amy Cowell.

Titanium Wedding Rings: Lighter, with a Trade-Off

Or Titanium ringsย  have a dedicated following for good reason. It is noticeably lighter than tungsten. If you have never worn a ring before, or find you are very conscious of weight on your hand, titanium is a more comfortable starting point. We use Grade 5 titanium, the same specification used in aerospace components including jet engine parts.

Where titanium falls short is surface hardness. At Mohs 6, it is significantly harder than gold, but it picks up surface marks more readily than tungsten in daily wear. After a year of wearing a titanium ring every day, fine scratches will be visible. Our review data reflects this. We see more wear-related feedback from titanium customers than from tungsten customers.
โ€œThe quality of the titanium wedding band is excellent. It feels strong but lightweight, sits comfortably, and the engraving is clean and exactly as requested.โ€
Daniel Kay, London.
Verified Buyer.
Titanium also cuts more easily than tungsten in a medical emergency, worth noting for anyone who works in healthcare or has concerns about ring removal.

Polished or Brushed Finish? What Actually Holds Up

Both finishes work well for daily wear on tungsten. But they age differently, and the difference is worth understanding.

A polished finish is a mirror surface. It looks sharp in the box and it photographs beautifully. On tungsten, it holds up very well because the metal itself does not scratch in normal use. But if the ring takes a single hard knock against something very sharp, that one mark can stand out against the mirror surface. It reflects light in all directions, which means any irregularity catches the eye.

A brushed or matte finish has a directional texture that diffuses light. It shows fingerprint oils less readily. And if the surface does take a contact mark, that mark disappears into the existing texture. Day to day, a brushed ring looks consistent. It does not show the small accumulation of contact that polished surfaces collect over time.

The practical advice: if you work with your hands or want a ring that looks the same after five years of daily life without any effort, choose brushed. If the mirror finish is what drew you to the ring and you like maintaining things, choose polished. On tungsten, both will last. The choice is about what you want to see on your finger every day, not about durability.

Our Champion ring is a very popular wedding ring.

Choosing the Right Width: 4mm, 6mm or 8mm

Newman Bands wedding rings are available in 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm. There is no universal rule, but the patterns from our order data are consistent enough to be useful.
Width Best for Notes
4mm Minimal look; first-time ring wearers; men who wear multiple rings Our slimmest option. Popular with men who want something barely noticeable on the hand.
6mm Standard width; the most versatile choice; suits most hand sizes The most popular width overall. Default for matching pairs. Works on almost any hand.
8mm Bold look; larger hands; men who want clear presence Most popular for larger fingers.

Men with larger hands, typically UK ring size W and above, almost always choose 8mm. It matches the scale of the hand. Men with smaller fingers, typically size P and below, often find 8mm overwhelming and are happier with 6mm or 4mm.

The 4mm customer is usually a first-time ring wearer who wants to barely notice the ring is there, or someone who wears multiple rings on the same hand. It is our most understated option.
One important note on width and sizing: wider bands feel tighter because more surface area contacts the finger. If you are ordering an 8mm ring, go up half a UK size from your measured size.
When couples buy matching rings, the most common pairing is 8mm for him and 6mm for the same design. The King in gold and the Elie in silver are both popular in this configuration.

Should You Engrave Your Wedding Ring?

Ring engraving is one of the most meaningful things you can add to a wedding ring, and one of the most common sources of avoidable problems if not handled in the right order.

We engrave in-house using laser engraving. The process works on both tungsten and titanium. The most popular choices we see are names, wedding dates, coordinates of where couples met or married, short personal phrases, and Bible quotes. One we see regularly: “Property of [partner’s name].”

Our process: order the ring first, try it on, confirm it fits, then return it to us free for engraving. We turn it around the same day. The whole process, including the initial try-on, return and engraving, typically takes around a week. But we can also engrave straight away if you know your size for sure.

โ€œI love the free return service after checking it fits me so I can get it engraved. Highly recommend for a groom looking for a stylish but affordable and durable wedding ring.โ€

UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013: read this before engraving
Once a ring has been laser-engraved it becomes a personalised item.
Under UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, personalised goods are exempt from the standard 14-day cancellation right.
An engraved ring cannot be returned or exchanged for a different size, even if ordered by mistake.
Confirm your size. Then engrave. Not the other way around.

How Far in Advance Should You Order?

Most of our customers order months before the wedding. They want the sizing process done, the exchange handled if needed, and the engraving confirmed well before the day.
Around 20% leave it to the last week or two. In our experience these are not disorganised grooms. Most know exactly what they want and ordered other things months in advance. The ring got left. It happens.
The honest answer: last-minute is genuinely fine. We stock all sizes and designs. If you order before 5pm Monday to Friday (or 11am Saturday), we dispatch the same day with next-day Royal Mail Tracked delivery. Engraving is completed same day. A groom who orders on Monday morning can have an engraved ring on Tuesday.
The one real risk: if you need a size exchange, that adds three to five days. This is the only scenario where last-minute becomes a problem. If you know your size with certainty, last-minute is not an issue. If you do not, order the ring sizer first. Even then, the full process from sizer to engraved ring typically takes under a week.

Buying Matching Wedding Rings as a Couple

Around half of couples who buy from us choose matching or coordinated rings. The other half make independent choices, sometimes matching metal, sometimes not.
The most common matching pairs: the King in gold (his, 8mm) paired with the same design in 6mm; the Elie or Champion in silver-colour in a 6mm and 8mm combination. Some brides buy their partner’s ring, see what arrives, and come straight back to order their own wedding band from us.
โ€œSo happy with my husband to be's wedding band. A design that was more him and something we hadn't found anywhere else. Now looking at getting my wedding band here too as been so impressed.โ€
Jenna Cutmore, Egham.
Verified Buyer
There is no rule that wedding rings must match. Many couples deliberately choose different styles. What matters is that you are both happy with what you will wear every day.

Try Before You Buy: How the Newman Bands Services Work

We offer two ways to reduce the risk of ordering the wrong ring.
Free ring sizer: Select “I don’t know my ring size” on any product and we send a physical ring sizer to your address, often arriving next day. Try it at different times of day. The entire process from sizer to receiving your ring typically takes three days.
Try at Home (ยฃ5 service charge): Choose three rings from our range. We send all three along with a ring sizer. Try them on at home, without any pressure. When you are ready, return them using our free pre-paid label. You pay ยฃ50 upfront and ยฃ45 is refunded on return. No obligation to buy.
โ€œThe Try at Home rings idea worked out really well, allowing us to choose the right wedding band. Turnaround times on all occasions were fast and returning the items was easy.โ€
Kerry Taylor, Northwich.

โ€œI ordered the try on rings so my boyfriend could pick out a wedding band he will love. All three rings were stunning. The option to do the try on is the best idea.โ€

The Most Consistent Wedding Ring Choices at Newman Bands

After 100,000+ orders and 10,000+ reviews, patterns emerge. Three tungsten rings appear in our reviews more consistently than any others for wedding use.
The Elie. Polished silver-colour tungsten. Clean, timeless, works with anything. The most popular matching wedding ring we sell. Men who want a classic band that does not look like a fashion choice almost always land here. Pairs naturally with a 6mm version for the bride. Martyn Spencer put it simply: “Really happy with my new Elie tungsten wedding ring and so is my wife.”
The King. Gold-colour tungsten. Warm, substantial, and consistently praised for looking better in person than in photographs. The gold tone reads as premium without the cost or scratch risk of solid gold. Popular with grooms who want something warm-toned without the maintenance of real gold. Amanda Tarbotton described the King as “better than a normal wedding band” after wearing it daily.

The Champion. Available in silver, black, and gold. The most versatile ring in our range. Grooms who want a wedding ring that could also function as a fashion ring after the ceremony tend to choose the Champion. Clean lines, slightly more contemporary than the Elie.

All three are tungsten, priced between ยฃ58 and ยฃ65. All arrive in a black presentation gift box with a black cloth pouch. Several customers have mentioned the packaging as part of what makes the experience feel considered.

What About Gold or Silver Wedding Rings?

We do not sell solid gold or silver rings at Newman Bands. We sell gold-coloured and silver-coloured tungsten rings, and we are honest about the distinction.
If you want a gold-look wedding ring that will still look good in ten years without polishing, gold-coloured tungsten is genuinely the better option for daily wear. Gold scratches at Mohs 2.5. Tungsten sits at 9 to 9.5. That difference shows on the ring within months of wearing it every day.
If you want a wedding ring as a financial asset, something with intrinsic monetary value, that is a different question and a fair one. Gold holds value in ways tungsten does not. For that, a traditional jeweller selling solid precious metal is the right place to go. We would rather tell you that than take your money for the wrong product.
One thing customers often say after buying gold-coloured tungsten: they prefer it to real gold. It looks great, it does not tarnish, and losing it at ยฃ55 is very different from losing it at ยฃ500. About one in four or five people lose a ring at some point in their life.
โ€œSo pleased I found Newman Bands instead of paying silly amounts for the same ring elsewhere.โ€
Stephanie McLeod, Newcastle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Indefinitely, with normal daily wear. Tungsten does not tarnish, corrode, or lose its surface under everyday contact. The metal will outlast a gold ring by many years in terms of appearance. The main risk is sharp impact: tungsten can crack if dropped on a hard floor. Newman Bands replaces cracked rings. We have customers whose 2022 wedding bands still look as good as the day they arrived.
Yes. Our preferred process: order the ring, try it on to confirm the fit, then return it to us free for engraving. We complete engraving the same day and dispatch it next day. If you are confident in your size, you can choose engraving at the point of order. Important: once engraved, the ring becomes a personalised item and cannot be returned under UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
Exchange it. Return it free within 100 days (unworn, other than trying on) and we will send the correct size. Around 30% of all customers need a size exchange, even those who were measured at a jeweller. It is a completely normal part of the process. The exchange is free.
At Newman Bands it is roughly 50/50. Some couples choose together; some make it a surprise. For a surprise, use the Try at Home service or order the ring sizer first to avoid a size guess. If the surprise goes wrong on size, the free exchange process resolves it without drama.
Yes. Tungsten rings are removed under emergency conditions by applying controlled pressure: the ring cracks cleanly and safely. Titanium cuts more easily with standard tools. In over 100,000 orders, we have never had a customer report emergency removal being a genuine problem. The concern is understandable but the practical risk is very low.
