Tungsten carbide rings can be engraved — but not by traditional methods, and not by most high-street jewellers. The reason is simple physics: tungsten carbide has a Mohs hardness of 9 to 9.5, making it harder than every standard engraving tool except a diamond. The jewellery industry’s conventional steel gravers, rated at Mohs 5 to 7, will not mark it.

Why Tungsten Engraving Is Different from Gold or Silver

Gold and silver sit at Mohs 2.5 on the hardness scale. The Two Methods That Work on Tungsten

Two engraving methods have the hardness to mark tungsten carbide: laser engraving and diamond-tipped rotary engraving.

Laser engraving: A high-powered laser vaporises or discolours the surface material at microscopic scale. It does not rely on mechanical hardness — it uses thermal energy. The result is a precise, consistent mark at approximately 0.1 to 0.3mm depth. Laser engraving is the most common method for tungsten rings; it produces clean, sharp lines with uniform depth and is fast enough for commercial use. Diamond-tipped rotary engraving: A diamond burr (Mohs 10) physically cuts into the tungsten surface. Depth is typically 0.2 to 0.5mm — slightly deeper relief than laser. This method works well for cursive scripts and decorative styles where depth adds visual dimension. It takes longer than laser engraving and requires specialist rotary equipment with diamond bits.

A note on black tungsten rings: Newman Bands black tungsten rings are finished with Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) coating. Laser engraving on a PVD-coated ring marks through the coating into the base metal, which produces a visually different result — the engraved lines will show the lighter tungsten beneath the dark coating. This can create an attractive contrast effect. Confirm this with your engraver before ordering.

Some customers love this two-tone contrast; others prefer to keep the engraving consistent with the ring colour. If you want the engraving lines to blend with the ring rather than contrast, order a plain (non-black, non-coated) tungsten ring for engraving.

Can You Engrave a Tungsten Ring at Home?

Not practically. Consumer-grade rotary tools (Dremel-style) fitted with standard carbide or steel bits cannot produce clean marks on sintered tungsten carbide. The tool bits are not hard enough to cut the material consistently.

Diamond-coated Dremel bits are available in hardware shops, and these can scratch tungsten. However, producing legible text — clean, consistent letterforms with uniform depth — requires both the correct tool hardness and precise machine control. A hand-held rotary tool cannot deliver the stability needed for engraving text. The result of attempting home engraving on tungsten is typically a series of scratched, irregular marks rather than readable characters.

Do Not Attempt Home Engraving: Attempting to engrave a tungsten ring at home with consumer tools will most likely damage the ring’s surface without producing legible text.
