How Long Do Titanium Rings Last? The Honest Answer
Written by Alan MacLachlan, Owner, Newman Bands (Horsham, West Sussex)
Alan has overseen more than 100,000 ring orders since founding Newman Bands alongside Clare MacLachlan. Newman Bands is the trading name of Manzora Ltd, founded in Horsham, West Sussex in 2001. The business has sold rings since 2019, with every design and size held in stock in the UK โ most orders arrive within one to two days of dispatch. Alan personally answers customer queries on metal selection and ring choice every week. Newman Bands has over 10,000 verified five-star reviews on Trustpilot and Reviews.io.
A quality titanium ring lasts a lifetime. Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V titanium is chemically stable, corrosion-resistant, and does not degrade under normal daily wear. The most noticeable change you will see over years is gradual surface patina on polished finishes. The ring looks used. Not damaged.
We have fulfilled over 100,000 ring orders from Horsham, West Sussex. Titanium rings do not come back to us because the metal has worn out. The most common reason for a second titanium ring is wanting a different style or a new width.

The Titanium Metal: How Long Does It Last?
Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V titanium does not corrode, tarnish, or degrade under normal daily wear. A passive oxide layer forms naturally on the surface when titanium contacts air. This layer protects the metal from moisture, sweat, and mild chemical exposure. Scratch through it and it re-forms within seconds.
Corrosion: The passive oxide layer resists acids, saltwater, sweat, and most household chemicals. Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V is the same grade used in aircraft frames and jet engines. It performs under conditions far more demanding than a ring on your finger.
Tarnishing: Titanium does not tarnish. No chemical reaction with air or skin changes its surface colour. It looks the same at year ten as it does on day one.
Structural integrity: The metal does not weaken from daily use. Years of normal ring-wearing do not alter the physical structure of the titanium.
Men come to us with gold rings from ten to fifteen years of daily wear and ask to switch. The wear is visible. We show them titanium rings from our display stock of similar age. The difference in surface condition is significant. Titanium ages better than gold under real daily conditions.
What About PVD-Coated Titanium Colour?
Newman Bands uses IP/PVD coating for all titanium ring colours. The vacuum deposition process bonds a hard coating to the titanium surface at the atomic level. This applies to black, blue, gold-tone, and silver-grey titanium โ all finishes use PVD, not bare metal.
Layer thickness: Typically 10 to 100 nanometres. This is thin. The colour is structural, not applied, but the layer is fine enough to wear through at high-contact points.
Fade pattern: High-contact edges, the points where the ring contacts surfaces and objects, see the most abrasion. These fade first. The flat face of the ring maintains colour the longest. Under normal office and home wear, edge fading takes years.
Re-coating: Newman Bands does not offer re-coating services. Re-applying PVD coating to a consumer ring requires specialist vacuum deposition equipment and is not a practical option for a worn ring.
| PVD COLOUR: WHAT TO EXPECT |
|---|
| The colour on an IP/PVD titanium ring is a bonded coating, not a painted finish. |
| On the flat face, colour holds well for years under normal wear. |
| On high-contact edges, the PVD coating wears gradually over years of sustained abrasion. |
| This is expected behaviour โ not a defect or fault. |
| Avoid harsh chemicals. Normal washing, showering, and swimming are fine. |
What Affects Titanium Ring Longevity?
| Factor | Effect on Longevity |
|---|---|
| Daily manual work | Accelerates surface scratching. May wear PVD colour on edges faster under sustained abrasion. Personally I would recommend Tungsten instead. You get used to the slight extra weight fast. |
| Chemical exposure | Strong acids and bases may affect the PVD coating. Household chemicals at normal dilution are generally safe. Avoid prolonged exposure to bleach or chlorine-based cleaners. |
| Abrasive materials | Sustained abrasion from stone, rough metals, or sandpaper accelerates surface wear. |
| Grade of titanium | Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V, confirmed from our supplier specification, is harder and more wear-resistant than lower-grade titanium alloys. |
| Type of finish | Brushed finish hides scratch accumulation. Polished finish shows surface patina more clearly over time. |
How Titanium Compares to Other Metals Over Time
Gold has been the traditional ring metal for centuries. It carries cultural and sentimental weight many men value. For daily wear durability, titanium outlasts gold by a significant margin. Silver requires regular polishing to maintain appearance. Titanium requires nothing.
| Metal | After 5 Years Daily Wear | After 10 Years Daily Wear |
|---|---|---|
| Titanium (Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V) | Light surface patina on polished. Brushed finish looks the same. | Visible patina on polished. Brushed still looks near-new. |
| Gold (18ct) | Visible scratching. Ring noticeably thinner from polishing. | Significant wear. Reduced profile if polished regularly. |
| Silver (925) | Heavy scratching and tarnish without consistent maintenance. | Very worn without regular professional care. |
โIโve had my titanium ring from Newman Bands for three years now and it still looks exactly as it did on the day it arrived. No scratches, no tarnish, no fading. Would not hesitate to recommend.โ

Will a Titanium Ring Last a Lifetime?
Yes. The Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V titanium metal lasts indefinitely. It does not degrade, corrode, or weaken under normal wear. Fine surface scratches accumulate slowly on polished finishes. These are cosmetic, not structural.
PVD colour on ring edges wears gradually over years of heavy daily wear. The flat face holds colour longest. Neither of these are defects โ they are expected outcomes of normal use on a coated ring.
The most common reasons customers replace a titanium ring: wanting a different style, a change in width preference, or a size adjustment. Not metal failure. Not surface deterioration severe enough to need replacement.
| TITANIUM RING LONGEVITY: SUMMARY |
|---|
| Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V titanium does not degrade, tarnish, or corrode. |
| Polished finishes develop a surface patina over years. Brushed finishes hide this. |
| PVD colour on edges wears over time. The flat face holds colour longest. |
| No maintenance is required for a plain titanium ring. |
| The most common reason for replacement is a style or size preference, not wear. |
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do titanium rings last?
The titanium metal lasts indefinitely. Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V does not degrade under normal daily wear. A polished finish develops a surface patina over years. PVD colour on edges may lighten over years of sustained heavy use. Neither affects the ring structurally. Most men never replace a titanium ring because the metal has worn out.
Does titanium tarnish or corrode?
No. Titanium forms a passive oxide layer on its surface, which resists moisture, sweat, and most household chemicals. The layer is self-repairing. Titanium does not tarnish, corrode, or discolour under normal daily wear.
Is titanium good for a long-term ring?
Yes. Titanium outlasts gold and silver in surface durability over years of daily wear. It requires no maintenance, does not tarnish, and the metal structure does not weaken from use. For practical daily wear, titanium is an excellent long-term choice.
How long does PVD titanium colour last?
Years, depending on daily wear pattern. High-contact edges show wear before the flat face. Under normal office and home wear, visible edge wear typically takes several years. Heavy manual work accelerates this. The flat face maintains colour much longer.
