Built for long-term wear — retains its shape and finish even with daily use.

Polished tungsten with a natural abalone shell inlay running through the centre. 6mm or 8mm. The shell shifts between blue, green, and turquoise depending on the light — no two rings look exactly the same. Most buyers choose the Shield as a wedding band or an engagement ring for a partner who wants something with character. It’s also a popular gift for birthdays and anniversaries. 35+ five-star reviews.
Tungsten carbide sits at 9 on the Mohs hardness scale — one below diamond. It won’t scratch from daily wear, won’t tarnish, and won’t react with skin. The weight is comparable to 18-karat gold, so the ring feels solid and substantial on your finger. The abalone inlay is set flush into the band and sealed under a smooth finish, so the surface is even all the way round. Hypoallergenic. Comfort-fit interior. Engravable. Dispatched today.
What makes this ring worth it?
Walk into a jeweller and you’ll find versions of our rings for 3–4 times the price. The difference isn’t the ring — it’s the overheads. We work directly with the craftspeople who make them and carry the stock ourselves, which is how we can sell a ring that genuinely lasts for a fraction of high street prices.
Traditional gold and silver scratch, bend and lose their shine. That doesn’t happen here. We use a high end process called PVD plating which is the same process used on high end watches to keep your ring looking great.
Why buy from Newman Bands?
We’re based in Horsham and dispatch the same day for orders before 5pm (11am Saturday). That includes engraved rings — we hold stock and engrave on site, which is why we can still get it to you in 1–2 days. Most online ring sellers take 2 weeks or more.
We’ve fulfilled over 100,000 orders since 2019 and hold over 10,000 five-star reviews across Trustpilot and Reviews.io. Any questions before you buy — contact us directly. No chatbots, no outsourced support. We handle it ourselves.
What if it doesn't fit?
Tungsten and titanium can’t be resized, so we offer free exchanges or refunds on unengraved rings — no questions asked. If you want a refund or an exchange, you have 100 days to return it free for any reason.
Not sure of your size? Select “I don’t know my ring size” from the dropdown and we’ll send you a free ring sizer first.
THE DETAILS
One below diamond. Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials used in jewellery — it won’t scratch from keys, tools, or everyday contact. The PVD finish bonds the polished surface at a molecular level rather than plating on top, so it won’t peel, fade, or tarnish. James from Stoke-on-Trent put his through months of hard physical work without protecting it: “This tungsten carbide ring is as perfect as the day it was delivered and I didn’t even try to protect it.”
Tungsten carbide has almost the same density as 18-karat gold. You feel it the moment you put it on — solid, substantial, nothing like a lightweight fashion ring. Andrew from Birkenhead noticed immediately: “A very unique looking ring. Depending on the light it either looks blue, green or a mixture of both! Very weighty too.”
The abalone shell inlay is a natural material — every ring has its own pattern of blue, green, and turquoise. The colours shift as the light changes, so the ring looks different at every angle. The shell is set flush into the tungsten band and sealed smooth, so there’s no raised edge or texture change. HA from Ayr: “The ring is astounding! I love how the abalone shell reflects off of light and the uniqueness of its pattern.”
Every ring arrives in a presentation box. Add a date, name, or message with laser engraving done in-house. We engrave and post the same day. Jenny from Leicester bought the Shield as a gift: “When I opened the box I was absolutely blown away by the colour and the quality of the ring. My husband is going to be a very happy man.”

Who This Ring Is For
The Shield draws three main buyer groups. The largest: partners choosing a wedding band or engagement ring. Wives, girlfriends, and fiancées picking a ring for someone who wants something distinctive — the abalone shell gives it colour and character without being loud.
Kyle from Reading bought it as his wedding band: “The ring is stunning, the quality is perfect and the delivery super quick. Everyone complimented me on how beautiful the ring is.”
The second group: gift buyers marking a milestone. Birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas. Gemma from Newcastle upon Tyne ordered it for her husband for Christmas: “I’m hoping that he loves it as much as I do. I’m definitely going to be coming back for one for me in the new year.” The third: buyers drawn specifically to the abalone. Ged chose it for his wedding because the shimmer reminded him of something he already loved: “Being a guitarist I love the shimmer of abalone so this ring was just perfect for me.”
A polished tungsten band with a natural abalone shell inlay running through the centre. The shell shifts between blue, green, and turquoise depending on the light and the angle — in direct sunlight it flashes vivid blues and greens, under warmer indoor light it leans towards teal and aqua. Every ring carries a slightly different pattern because the shell is natural, not printed or replicated.
The inlay sits flush with the tungsten surface, sealed smooth, so there’s no ridge or texture change where the materials meet. The interior is a comfort-fit curve — rounded rather than flat, so it slides on easily and sits without pinching.“Stunning piece of jewellery! Perfect fit and pictures don’t do it justice.” — Rachel Dale, Scunthorpe Hollie from the United Kingdom describes the visual effect: “It sparkles colour in the light.”
Why Tungsten
Tungsten carbide rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale — one below diamond. It’s approximately ten times harder than 18-karat gold. Under normal daily wear, it won’t scratch from keys, tools, gym equipment, or anything softer than a sapphire.
It’s also one of the heaviest ring materials available — nearly the same density as 18-karat gold. That weight is something buyers notice the moment they pick it up. It feels solid and substantial, not like a lightweight fashion band.
Tungsten won’t rust, tarnish, or corrode. The PVD finish bonds at a molecular level, not painted or plated on top. It won’t react with skin. Nickel-bonded tungsten carbide is hypoallergenic — the nickel bonds so tightly with the tungsten during manufacturing that it loses its ability to cause a skin reaction.
Tungsten can’t be resized. If the fit isn’t right, return it free and we’ll exchange it the same day it arrives.
How it Compares
Buyers consistently describe the Shield as looking and feeling far better than they expected. Alison from Driffield: “This is a beautiful ring; excellent value for money. The abalone shell reflects the light in a beautiful way, it really is a special piece.”
An abalone inlay ring from a specialist jeweller typically costs several times what you’d pay here. The Shield’s combination of natural shell, polished tungsten, and solid weight gives it a look that reads as luxury — and buyers notice. Darren from the United Kingdom is a repeat buyer: “This is the second ring I have bought from Newman Bands and the quality is fantastic.”

“I’ve had gold, silver, rock, composite… whatever over the years. But they’ve all broken or become misshapen. This tungsten carbide ring is as perfect as the day it was delivered and I didn’t even try to protect it.”
James Shelley, Stoke-on-Trent
40 verified reviews — 39 five-star ratings. The most talked-about feature is the way the abalone shell shifts colour: blue, green, turquoise, depending on the light. Multiple buyers say the Shield looks even better in person than on screen because the depth and colour shift do not fully translate through a photograph. Buyers consistently describe it as excellent value for money.
“Stunning piece of jewellery! Perfect fit and pictures don’t do it justice.”
Rachel Dale, Scunthorpe
A large proportion of Shield buyers are purchasing it as a gift — for a wedding, an engagement, a birthday, or Christmas. Elaine from London bought it after their engagement and her partner is thrilled. The combination of natural abalone, the weight of the tungsten, and the presentation box creates a ring that reads as luxury. Alun from Chipping Norton described the return and exchange process as the easiest he has ever used.
You have 100 days to try it at home. If it’s not right for any reason, return it free.
The most common hesitation with an abalone shell ring is whether the inlay will look as vivid in person as it does on screen — whether the colour shift is real or just good photography. Alun from Chipping Norton wasn’t sure about ordering online, but after receiving his Shield he called the exchange process the easiest he’d ever used and praised the quality. Rachel from Scunthorpe put it simply: “Pictures don’t do it justice.”
