Tips to get the correct size using a ring sizer
- Wrap the plastic ring sizer around the base of the finger you want to wear the ring on and make a note of the size. Try it at different times of the day.
- Then try it around your knuckle. You’ll want a snug fit here. Some people will find that they need a larger size than at the base of their finger (so the ring can go over their knuckle). Then just slide it down to make sure it’s still comfortable.
- You can also often get your finger measured for free at a jewelers. Although it’s worth noting that about 30% of time we’ve found they’ll give you the wrong size and you’ll end up exchanging your ring for a different size.
Measure Your Ring Size at Home
Or you could choose to use the tools that you have at home.
You are at a higher risk of miscalculating your size, so be careful and take a few measurements.
Common tools you can use are:
- Measuring tool
- Plastic strips
Tip: A good rule of thumb when using tools from home is to make sure they are made of non-stretchable material.
- Wrap the measuring material around the base of your finger/ close to your knuckle (specifically where you want to wear your ring) and mark it with ink. With a plastic strip, you can wrap it around your finger, and tighten it (generally provides more accurate results).
- Then you can use a ruler to calculate the measurement. This is your ring circumference. Dividing this by 3.15 will get your diameter.
A ring size chart will then determine your size, according to the sizing your shop uses (numerical in US; alphabetic in UK/Europe).
Purchasing Ring Size Tools
You can also purchase specific tools to increase your accuracy. Ring-size tools are generally affordable and widely available online. The three best types are:
- Finger gauge sizes and benders
- Ring mandrels and sticks
- Ring clamps

Does Weight/Height Affect The Ring Size?
Normally your height has very little relation when it comes to the size of your fingers. Just because you are on the shorter side else doesn’t mean you will have smaller fingers than someone taller, and vice versa.
But your weight and your finger size will have a little impact. Your finger size can fluctuate with your weight.
When Should You Measure Your Fingers?
The size of your finger can actually differ slightly with changes in temperature. In order to get the best results, you will want to measure your fingers in the evening or the middle of the day, when temperatures are typically more stable.
Do not measure your finger when the weather is very hot or cold. Also, avoid taking any measurements while you are sick, just had a workout, or after consuming a lot of alcohol (by all means, propose then, just save your ring sizing til the next afternoon!)
What To Do With Inbetween Sizes?
How To Figure Out Someone’s Ring Size Without Letting Them Know
It is a little tricky to figure out someone’s ring size without giving the game away! If the person already has a ring, try to see if you can borrow that ring (or get a friend to borrow it) and take it to an existing jeweler to measure the ring size. Or you can work on measuring the diameter at home.
If the ring is flat, you can trace the circle of the ring on a piece of paper. Or you could also simply try asking family or friends. Some of them might have tactics of finding out the answers without letting the intended person suspect a thing.
Otherwise, you can do a sneak attack, where they take it off to shower or sleep. Slip it on your own finger, and take note of where it stops. Or buy a bar of soap and turn it into a makeshift mould.
What Happens If You Get The Wrong Size?
If you get the wrong size, you might have to resize or replace it. Depending on where you get the ring from, it can turn out to be expensive. Resizing often involves removing or adding in a small amount of metal.
There are certain ring materials that cannot be resized, such as:
- Eternity rings
